Just as a little update to this, Ken Hitchcock was on AM640 today talking about the defense issue and seemed extremely concerned about the problem. He basically said that they wanted to use a few of their prospects in the position a la Gunnarsson for the Leafs, but they are all struggling or injured. He said they have Roy in there now, but didn't make it sound like its a solution. Wouldn't be surprised if they make a deal in the next week or so, even if it is a minor one.

If Howson is looking for a long term solution (ie. a player signed beyond this year), I think Steve Staios is the guy.

Howson loves former Oilers and the Oilers need to shed Staios' contract in order to resign Grebeshkov/Gagner/Cogliano in the summer.

Staios and a pick for Blunden?

Bieksa could probably be had for the right winger but I think we would expect a pretty good player back.

and no way can we have two alex picards on a team...
As marginal a NHL D as there can be . Horrible puck mover combined with a knack for taking himself out of position going for the big hit and bad penalties all the time.

Dreger has to be drunk, but hopefully not.

If Burke could get torres for the 3.5 million Finger, then by all means.

Of course is howson the guy who signed commodore????

Why wouldny they try sopel? Get a pick and a servicable depth defenseman.....

Roy has played surprisingly well in his appearances with the CBJ (4 points in 8 games for a guy we figured would be in the AHL all year can't be all bad, right?), but I don't know if he'd be a fix either.

Now you're getting greedy. If I were a Leafs fan I'd take Torres for Finger and run.

We do not have sufficient crap on the roster to send back, alas.

...hey, wait, that's a good thing, isn't it?

I'd take Finger over Sopel any day... I guess it would depend on what the pick is.

I'm still surprised that the Jackets haven't jumped all over Sopel. I guess if they haven't then it is because they don't want to get stuck with the contract for next year (especially with John Moore coming up the pipe, along with their AHL rookies). Howson must be looking for a pending UFA I guess. Finger is probably not a good fit then.

No doubt. Everyone knows Finger is a decent defender if you take away the contract. But as I wrote above, I think Howson must be looking for something a little less permanent. Sopel and Finger both have deals that stretch into next season, and they have some decent prospects they will want to try out.

Will the 6-3 loss to the Leafs be the catalyst to make a move for defensive help? I guess we'll see.

Looks like he had a reason for concern, judging by last night and other games thus far.

I wouldn't be surprised if Columbus and Colorado worked something up. Even though there's a bit of a fan grudge, the two managements made a deal in recent history, and both have a need: Columbus needs a defenseman, Colorado needs to get rid of a defenseman.

Clark, Salei, and Preissing could all be had for next to nothing and used as gap stops for the rest of the season.

The Rangers will take just about whatever dead weight salary the Blue Jackets have in exchange for Rozsival and the Rangers would probably add a pick, just not their 1st this year.

His cap hit stinks at $5 million for two more years, but actual salary paid in those last two years are $4 million and $3 million respectively.

Probably just wishful thinking on my part.

As a Toronto resident I see tons of Leaf games and scoff at the logic about Exelby. Its strictly numbers that prevent Exelby from cracking the Leaf lineup...which was the case with ex-Leaf Stralman as well, who has found a nice spot on CLB PP.

Exelby is a solid 5th or 6th guy who has lotsa grit...so small trade for 3rd pk or a guy like Blunden or Sesito.

Yeah I dont know whats going on there, maybe just a bad game, but when Grabo and Blake are making your team look terrible, you need better d.

Yikes, that was awful.

After watching that crap last night they should be looking for more than a d-man. Can't give the puck away and expect to win in the NHL. Can't play half-assed and expect to win in the NHL. This teams has too much talent and a HOF coach to be this bad. Last night was embarrassing. OUCH.

I was thinking Exelby could be an option. Toronto has a ton of D'men and a big shut down guy like Exelby could add some needed toughness on the backend.

I doubt Burke gets anything higher than a 4th rd pick for him tho.

Too much talent up.

The need a 'star' shutdown guy on the backend.
