i remember reading last year that i think 7 of the 8 teams in the western conference that made the playoffs were the teams that were in playoff positions after 25 or 30 games.

Ducks were the wild card last year--they went on one hell of a run starting in March

gee--curious who can guess which team fell out of the top eight

I havn't been watching as much hockey and my gf now has a bigger smile. I still watch all Oiler games that I can but I am usually busy doing something while the game is going on. Like on Friday I was cooking for all the guests we had over and on Saturday I was putting some furniture together while hearing about us get drubbed. Really helps after we loose to not really give a **** because I didn't really have a whole lot invested in the game.

As for this coming thursday i won't be watching as I have my works christmas party and Saturday I have a course that I have to attend all day and some genius decided to make it a noon game. Friggen americans and their afternoon games.

Staples article regarding mental mistakes vs. lost battles is extremely enlightening.

There's a misconception that the Oilers are "too small" or not "gritty". Really, the main problem with the Oilers defensively is they're just not communicative enough, which is leading to unstructured play, which is leading to missed checks.

The Oilers need a major back there, somebody who can tell the centers where they need to be, somebody who can direct the troops. Souray is the closest thing we have to that, but I think he's also not quite comfortable in that mold. Somebody really needs to step up and take the reigns, and it's got to be a a center or a defenceman, or our d-zone play won't improve.

What a great piece.

"We kept on winning into the late eighties, but it was largely because of the incredible closeness among the players and the leadership and talent of guys like Messier and Gretzky. Essentially we were playing for one another and for the fans, not for the organization."

If only the players felt that way today (or when MacT was coach).

still gotta watch hockey so ive been watchign alot of hawks /rangers games. exciting offensive hockey. helps with the hangover from typical oiler games. anyone see taht versteeg goal last night??? id classify taht as nicest thus far.

my second choice wouldve been other. after the depression from the oilers i need a solid foundation for a sport so i chose darts...... followed by pool

Good article about the Oilers Defense making mental mistakes. It is amazing how many times they will not make the simple play and bank it off the glass and out but would rather try to hold possession in the zone only to lose it. Alot of goals have been scored because of those kinds of mental mistakes

i agree the simply play tends to be there alot more often then the d is looking for. but at the same time teams have no problem entering our zone and setting up down low or working it around to their d men. you dont see detroit chip the puck up often unless they are desperate or they know their winger has support on the dumped puck. we dont have the skill to play a puck possession game like detroit but in the future id like to see it implemented.

Thanks for the Oilers nation article. Weren't flames fans pimping Ritchie Reghyr(sp?) last season? Like Wayne said, funny that he made the plane ride over to europe to play hockey.

I remember hearing that around the water cooler last year. Oh well.

If it wasn't for Twitter I couldn't get the ON blogs. If they block Twitter, or Twitter stops working on the old browsers we use here at the office I won't be able to update from that site anymore.

Well y'know... Which is it? When they hard rim it, fans go nuts because it's "passing the problem on to somebody else". When they eat it, the fans go nuts because it's a "mental mistake".

Sometimes it's good to hang on to it. Sometimes it's good to chip it out. The mental mistakes aren't to do with holding on to the puck too long. It's more to do with where you're supposed to be on the ice. If Visnovsky hangs on to it, the center has to be there to support him. Too often that center is nowhere to be found, and that's where the turnovers come in to play.
