If he is not sent down and 10 NHL games or 30 days pass, then he must clear waivers again in order to be sent down.

I don't think there's any doubt that he will be sent down, but there have been cases where players have been placed on waivers and not sent down.
I'm not sure how tight the cap is, but if there's enough room, I think it'd be realistic to give Johnson his shot and keep Vally around in case he craps the bed. If Johnson is good, then down Valley goes.

Just like I said. He cleared. Why would anyone claim him? He's been terrible.

Re-entry might be a different story.

It is on re-entry that's the problem.

As respects why the Pens gave up on Johnson, there have been varying opinions on him over the years, and he has definitely had rebound issues all along. The Pens thought that in the final analysis, he will not be an NHL netminder and saw someone else they wanted.

Johnson still has the rebound issues (I still saw them as recently as last weekend), but it has not bitten him recently in the AHL. We shall see whether it comes back to haunt him in the NHL.

Honestly, how much worse could Johnson play compared to Valiquette in a backup role?

And for that matter, the way Lundqvist has been playing.. a fresh new face for a netminder might be a strong thing. We haven't had strong goaltending, consistently, since the 7-game winning streak. You could say we haven't had strong ANYTHING, however, since then..

Personally, I am not worried about how much worse he could play. All I am concerned about is his development. If he is routed, then it could set his confidence back. As could him sitting on the bench and not getting into games.

Wasn't some of this also Johnson not wanting to get stuck behind others in the Pittsburgh organization?

As opposed to getting stuck behind Lundqvist for another 10 years?

This is a terrible move. Johnson has 18 minor league games experience and now he'll be playing behind a crazy, full-press offense team. Can't be good for his confidence or development.

Funnily enough, the thing he impressed me by most during the preseason was how few rebounds he gave up.

Torts is not even sure yet if the kid will see the ice in game. He's here to practice with the team, whether he'll play or not has to be seen. I'm not sure a 2 weeks stint with the big club is going to ruin his confidence. In case Torts dress him, that will be after Redden is back and after we regain some stability in defence. He's not going to throw him out there like this.

If Valliquette gets claimed on re-entry waivers, he'll have no choice

I think people might just be worried about how Johnson isn't going to be playing regularly like he just was in Hartford. The kid is on a run right now and they're putting a halt to that momentum and progress he was building. Great, he gets to practice with the Rangers...but he's also missing out on three huge road games against formidable opponents this week in the AHL, a chance to grow as a player.

Same here actually. Especially during the pre-season, he handled his rebounds very well. I think he's been working on it since last year.

Pittsburgh has other good young goaltenders besides Fleury including Brad Thiessen from Northeastern. He was a Hobey Baker Finalist last year and he left school early to sign with the Penguins. One thing to be stuck behind one player but another altogether to be in a traffic jam. I read somewhere (sorry can't remember where) that the Penguins were meh on Johnson and he was meh on the Penguins. 10 years? Have you ever heard of free agency?

I liked Johnson in pre-season. I though he played very big in the goal and let the puck hit him. Of course, a few good periods in September is a long way from starting in the NHL.

I'm hearing rebounds is his bad spot, but when he played in pre-season he was eating up all the pucks.

Gross says the Rangers put Dubinsky on LTIR

So they'll have that cap space until Dubinsky comes back off of it
