From the beginning of this year I was ok with managment using this season to evaluate what they have. I think they will get a pretty clear picture in that regard. As such the time has come for a new direction. I suspect that short of this the feelings that poisoned the last years of the Pocklington era could well start to return.
I am exactly like you, i kept preaching on this board for people to give the team some time to get healthy and then evaluate them but the Hemsky injury did it for me, i was officially on board for the dive for five thing right after that happened. Now, for the first time in a long time, i'm hoping for the team to tank and am hoping for every single bottom feeder to win, it sucks to have to root for this with 55-60 games to go but that is the reality these days in Oil Country...... I'm now having dreams about Hall or Seguin in Oiler silks and am asking for a perfect tank job for Christmas, that's all i ask.

Injuries aren't an excuse, they are reason. Healthy, this team is exactly where it has been for years, between 11th and 7th in the West.

Now, with rampant injuries, including to our most dangerous and exciting player, the team finally has what it needs to FULLY rebuild. I would do nothing major until the deadline. We have good players with good contracts, and some dead weight.

They need to shed the likes of Staios, Moreau, Pouliot and Nilsson at some point, but it doesn't need to be immediately. And they should not replace these players until the summer. They also should not replace them with more youth, they should sign solid veteran players for reasonable dollars.

Trading Gilbert, O'Sullivan or Cogliano now would be foolish unless the return were high. Moving Souray and Vishnovsky (especially) would be a bad idea too. Moving Horcoff is impossible.

Next season should see:

Penner-Gagner-Hemsky
Horcoff-Brule-Eberle
O'Sullivan- Cogliano- Stone
Jacques-Potulny-Stortini
CHEAPER VET-CHEAPER VET

Maybe move one of Cogliano or O'Sullivan for a legitimate, solid, defensive defenseman.

Only major positive this year has been the play of Penner, and perhaps Brule/Gagner to a lesser extent. Management needs to get smart fast. Keep Penner, Hemsky, Visnovsky and the cheap players and young players with potential, and try to move the rest for picks. Surely there must be some desperate GMs at the trade deadline.

Let the team get healthy, re-evaluate the situation at that point. Then move forward, make some good moves at the trade deadline and then reformat in the summer. This season isn't going to be a good one with all these injuries so why try to save it? Give your young players lots of experience.
teams NEVER get completely healthy, especially in this day and age of size, speed, and the violence in which the game is played.

when our mgmt realizes this then maybe we have a chance to affect some change

You have to accept that injuries have undoubtedly cost our team some wins. But I think most people can also see that this team just won't cut it, if we're planning on contending for the Cup. So instead of a 7-10th seed team, we're near or at the bottom. There's a fine line these days and losing our best offensive player and starting goaltender (among other injuries along the way) has cost us dearly.

What a devastating turn of events it has been since the beginning of the year. Unfortunately we'll never know if this group was capable of making the playoffs with all the bad luck illness and injuries we've had.

It is so sad to be sitting here at less than 30 games played feeling hopeless, but what disgusts me are the people who are strutting around these boards with an I told you so attitude. So ****ing happy the Oilers are doing so poorly so they can be right.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. These people are not fans, they are no more than trolls in sheeps clothing.

Says the guy calling Tom Gilbert Tammy Gilbert and has a bag over his avatar. Not sure if I can take your post seriously.

Everyone at teh beginning of the season thought the team would be the same crap as last year. So its funny that some actually had expectations that they were going to be something special. They are doing what everyone thought and probably even worse due to injuries. Suck it up and move on.

I will always be an Oiler fan, and getting a top prospect would be great for this team. Hall and MPS could be phenomenal in a few years.

Yup, and we just have the horses to pull that off!

I can't remember if I've ever seen the Oilers in last place in the West...

Whatever ... I don't have to defend my love of the oilers. Posting record speaks for itself. Btw I certainly wasn't pointing a finger at you

Hopefully they go 0-5 on this road trip and then give the home crowd a show following the tank/suck.

Think they can have a better record than all of Dallas, Detroit, Vancouver, STL, Minnesota and Anaheim?

All of them?

Most of them have one or two games in hand too.

We were tied for last place with the Winnipeg Jets on March 9, 1994. Prior to that we were dead last in the Western Conference for much of that season. I think that might be the last time(with any significant amount of GP)that we were last place but not too sure.

So what would be new? I predict tied with VC in points by end but because we **** the bed in the season series, we not only get 9th but another 1st round draft in the mediocre regions
