Overview
Extra InformationDefenseman Jakub Kindl will make his NHL debut tonight for the Detroit Red Wings against Edmonton at Joe Louis Arena, as Brian Rafalski's sore back will force him to miss the game.

Coach Mike Babcock said he was still deciding how he'd set up his defense for tonight, but he said Kindl, 22, will replace Rafalski on the first power-play unit with Nicklas Lidstrom.

“We’ll think about it a little more and see how the game’s going and the rhythm we get in,'' Babcock said. "Our forwards got to do a real good job tonight to protect our D. Kindl’s a real good player, moves the puck real well. He’ll play on our first power play tonight because he has that kind of ability.''

He added, "We feel Stewie (Brad Stuart) and Meechie (Derek Meech) have been a good pair. Whether E (Jonathan Ericsson) and Nick play together at times and then play with the other two guys (Brett Lebda and Kindl) at times, that’ll remain to be seen.''

Said Kindl: “It’s been a crazy two days. Last night I got into town, couldn’t fall asleep, I was rolling around in bed, thinking about the game. I loosened up a little bit, had a good skate, feel much better.’’

Rafalski is day-to-day. "He had some back stiffness yesterday,'' Babcock said. "We just didn’t feel with his history that wouldn't be worth pushing it today.''

Forward Patrick Eaves (sore left ankle) skated but will not play. The only change to the forward lines will see Ville Leino and Todd Bertuzzi switched, at least at the start of the game, as Babcock is trying to find a way to get Pavel Datsyuk rolling. Jimmy Howard is starting in goal.

Leino on a 1st line is a complete joke. If Babcock wants to get Pav going, get Zetterberg on his line, not Leino, geez.

That means it's a line of Leino - Cleary - Bertuzzi.

Oh wait, that's our 2nd PP unit.

We better set those oilers straight. Last time that loss pissed me off, so I want another revenge win like we did against Dallas.

As the tradition goes:

Let's go Red Wings, for **** sake!

I'm getting used to Howard in net. He had a good November. I hope he keeps working on his rebound control though.

As for Kindl, if he's on the 1st PP, I suspect he gets a point in his first game.

Go Wings!

Well, without a bona fide 2nd line center in the lineup aside from Datsyuk/Zetterberg, what would you suggest?

Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Cleary
Bertuzzi/Helm/Leino
Miller/Abdelkader/Holmstrom
May/Draper/Maltby

??

I wish Kindl the best of luck tonight. Keep it simple, play your game and he should be just fine. Its not like Edmonton is really rolling on all cylinders right now either.

The only set of lines I could see that would make sense if D and Z are together is this and the second line is terrible.

Datsyuk - Zetterberg - Holmstrom
Leino - Cleary - Bertuzzi
Draper - Helm - Miller
May - Abdelkader - Maltby

Eh, I wouldn't put Cleary at center (well, not 2nd line anyway)... what's wrong with giving Helm a shot? I mean, it's not like there's any kind of true, top-six talent in the lineup at the moment (aside from D/Z), and Helm's a pretty good two-way center...

Besides, I think Cleary is showing a bit of the Holmstrom 2.0 ability when on the D/Z line, might as well give him a chance to use it.

I'd rather Cleary on the top line with them too, but Holmstrom is even more useless when he doesn't have one of those two to help him out. So Homer being on the third/fourth line would be horrible. That's mostly why I have Cleary as the second line center, I would love for Helm to get his chance but then I don't know where to put Homer

If it were up to me when everyone is healthy, I'd want Holmstrom out of the lineup before Eaves and Miller.

You'd want the guy currently tied for the team lead in goals out of the line up over Eaves (17GP, 1G) and Miller (10GP, 2G)?

He had a quick start, but lately hasn't been that good and looks completely awful out there.

And that means Filppula moves to the top 6, Eaves and Miller are better options in the bottom 6 than Holmstrom is.

Howard, and Lebda to blame on that one... that puck was moving so slow, my grandmother could have stopped it.
