I don't like this so much from a Canucks standpoint though.

I'm sorry but you've got it twisted.. PMD like Kaberle usually have a much longer shelf life then the more aggressive and gritty defencemen. See Scott Niedermayer (35y/o), Brian Rafalski (35y/o), Kimmo Timonen (34y/o) & Sergei Gonchar (35y/o) & the last time I checked, each and every single one of those PMD are still vital to their respective teams' success.
Using your train of thought the Habs should just deal Andrei Markov (30y/o) because he'll regress to scrubs in a few years. Dan Boyle (32y/o), Brian Campbell (30y/o), Lubomir Visnovsky (32y/o) & Mark Streit (31y/o) will all be scrubs in just a few years too, right?
I can't believe I just had to explain something so obvious to someone that has over 10K posts on these boards.
Now, lets talk about how this trade makes the Leafs better?
Replace Kevin Bieksa (a fine player the Leafs absolutely do not need) with a PMD specialist & remove Ponikarovsky from the top-line and replace him with Jannik Hansen (another player the Maple Leafs absolutely do not need) & tell me exactly how the Leafs get better. Sure, Schneider would be welcome in Toronto but not at the expense of Kaberle and Poni. The Maple Leafs believe that Gustavsson fills the void that Schneider would fill between the pipes. I've said it once and I'll say it again, "The only intriguing component coming from the Canucks is the 1st round pick."
Now from the Canucks POV, I don't know why they would pony up the value the Maple Leafs want for Kaberle when they have Erhoff (who has been nothing short of fantastic) & Alex Edler who I believe will become an elite PMD in the near future. This deal makes no sense from both sides. YogiCanucks, you failed at trying to convince people that the Leafs would get better simply because two ex-'nucks would be playing in Toronto. It's not that simple
