THN Re-Evaluates the First Round of the 2005 Entry Draft (3 Kings Shift Around)

Thanks to Habsfan18 on the prospects board, he brought to everyone's attention that in this month's edition of THN, they re-did the 2005 entry draft in hindsight and here are the results:

1. Pittsburgh - Sidney Crosby
2. Anaheim - Anze Kopitar
3. Carolina - Paul Stastny
4. Minnesota - James Neal
5. Montreal - Carey Price
6. Columbus - Marc Staal
7. Chicago - Kris Letang
8. San Jose - Bobby Ryan
9. Ottawa - Devin Setoguchi
10. Vancouver - Marc-Edouard Vlasic
11. Los Angeles - TJ Oshie
12. NYR - Ondrej Pavelec
13. Buffalo - Matt Niskanen
14. Washington - Andrew Cogliano
15. NYI - Mason Raymond
16. Atlanta - Jonathan Quick
17. Phoenix - Niklas Hjalmarsson
18. Nashville - Jack Johnson
19. Detroit - Keith Yandle
20. Florida - Ryan Parent
21. Toronto - Tuukka Rask
22. Boston - Martin Hanzal
23. New Jersey - Gilbert Brule
24. St.Louis - Darren Helm
25. Edmonton - Niclas Bergfors
26. Calgary - Justin Abdelkader
27. Washington - Brian Lee
28. Dallas - Patric Hornqvist
29. Philadelphia - Anton Stralman
30. Tampa Bay - Kris Russell

Two Kings rise heavily and one falls heavily. What do you guys think of their list? Do you have one of your own?

- I'd still take Johnson over any defenseman in the draft, except possibly Staal.

- Justin Abdelkader...I would have to look at the rest of the draft, but this guy is a fringe NHL'er. I have a hard time believing there aren't attleast 35-40 players from that draft who have better longterm potential.

- Bergfors is much better than Helm

If this is how it really went the Ducks would have an insane 1-2 punch with Getzlaf and Kopitar. Wow

I wouldn't mind TJ Oshie on this team

The thing i find interesting about something like this is how the would look today if it did really go down like this.

Taylor still probably gets fired but who's cetering th first line?

I'd happy the way it is. We got JJ, Kopi and Quick. Even though JJ was acquired through trade. I honestly am very happy we have Quick, regardless if Bernier wins the job.

I'd replace Helm and Raymond with Butler and Boll. Others in that draft were S. Kostitsyn, Joslin, Gerbe, D'Agostini and Cumiskey

Come to think of it we did damn well out of that draft. 1st line center, probable top pairing D-man and a starting #1 goalie. If only we had done well in the '03 draft we would be set :\

I like Quick as much as the next guy but I'd probably take Rask before him.

That's my favorite. It's pretty funny, other than Crosby, who is obviously still #1, every other player shifted, most of them dramatically, except for Price. Not a single other team on the list drafts the same player.

God forbid someone admit the Canadiens could have drafted better.

Ryan, Setoguchi and Vlasic should all be above Price.

Agree with both of you guys. In Johnson's case, clearly they're just simply looking at the stats.

If this were last year, you'd probably have Bobby Ryan at 2 and Kopi at 8.

Btw, wasn't Steve Mason part of this draft?

price has a .910 save percentage behind a completely banged up team and has outplayed quick at least. he's also already in his 3rd full nhl season. rask has played 16 nhl games. i don't see the issue. he might not be the next roy, but he's still a good talent.

i will say that JJ falling that far is hilarious though. not a chance in the world. niskanen? vlasic? really? give me a break. i like both of them but they're not on the same level as johnson.

You could put Rask and Quick above Price.

This still does not explain why he's at #5. Way too high for Price.

Is this based on "If the 2005 draft were done over right now this is how it would go" or "if the 2005 Draft had gone as it should have then it would have gone this way..." because if it is the latter they left out Luc Bourdon (RIP)

It is the first one, which is why they left him out. There is no sense in speculating over something so metaphysical.

maybe it is operating under the assumption that the habs were going to take a goalie and he was the best available (which he was, IMO, even now).
