It was time to make a change, don't go away mad, just go away.

I am surprised Laviolette is the guy but also excited, I think he did a very good job in Carolina and they did him a favor releasing him while the ship full of creaky vets and injured cornerstones sinks there.

I figured this would be an in-house promotion but I'll take Lavi and his staff, class guy, looking forward to him coming in and tightening up some things that have gotten AWFULLY loose since our last win streak ended.

I don't think I've been amped up in the past four years, I'm calling people like I just had a kid. Tough luck for Stevens, hell of a nice guy, and with his personality- I'm sure he'll have no problem getting a studio job.

Celebratory Jamesons for me tonight!!!!

This is why I wasn't a huge fan of being in a rush to make Richards the captain. Jason Smith was a good captain for a year, but after that, they didn't really have to name one. I'm one who thinks actually wearing the C is somewhat overrated. People know who the leaders are in the room. Eric Lindros wore the C, but everyone knew Rod Brind'Amour was the real leader. All those Oiler teams, Gretzky wore the C, but they all knew Mark Messier was the leader.

Flyers have no excuses now. New coach, good roster. It's on the players now...they keep up this underachieving and we'll see Carter on his way out.

I thought it was smarter to name Timonen captain because I thought he was every bit as much of a leader as Richie was, but he was a lot older and mature.

I would have been in complete agreement if they named no captain. And if Richards were to resign as captain, and they still left the captaincy vacant, I would still agree with it.

If Richards were to vacant the throne, and it's all speculation, it would be silly not to name Pronger.

Pronger is the perfect choice for captain right now. I'm looking forward to tomorrow night's game.

Im happy about the new coach but Richards giving up the C doesnt sound like a great idea to me, and yes i know Pronger would be a better captain.

I hope the 'usual suspects' got the message better than that.

Quotes, in case they haven't been posted:

http://blogs.courierpostonline.com/f...tevens-firing/

Quote:
“Obviously, I’m disappointed,” Flyers captain Mike Richards told the Courier-Post. “It’s not something anybody wanted to happen. It seems to be the thing in professional sports these days. When things aren’t falling well for a team, the coach is the one that pays the price.”
Richards said he felt personally responsible for Stevens’ firing, the first under his reign as captain.

“There is a lot of disappointment on my end,” he said. “I grew up with Johnny and he made me the player I am today. He gave me confidence to be an offensive player and I won a (AHL) championship with him. He’s been a huge part of my career.”

Richards said he discussed the possibility of Stevens getting fired with Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren before the decision was made.
“Paul is always in it for the best of the team,” he said. “He’s the one who has to make the decision. He talked to me about how things were going, but I obviously didn’t have a say in it. I trust him to make the right decision for this hockey team.”

Richards made it clear he did not endorse Friday’s firing.

“We had a discussion about it and I told (Holmgren) I thought we could work through it. That’s why I do feel responsible. We have not been our best the last couple of games and I throw that on my shoulders.

“I feel like I’ve lost a good friend and I’ll be very disappointed not to see (Stevens) at the rink tomorrow. It’s a tough day for me but I look forward to working with Peter.”

Flyers defenseman and alternate captain Chris Pronger played just three months under Stevens and was more matter-of-fact about his firing.

“Obviously, you’re disappointed any time a coach gets fired because it means individually, players didn’t get things done and didn’t perform at the level we’re supposed to.

“I didn’t think we played anywhere near our capabilities and in this day and age the coach is the one held responsible. To say I’m surprised wouldn’t be right because I’ve been around the game long enough to know when somebody is on the chopping block and it was John. We put Holmgren into this difficult situation and he must have felt it was time for a change.”

Pronger said he knows very little about Laviolette other than the fact his teams are known for their gritty style of play. Laviolette won a Stanley Cup against Pronger’s Edmonton Oilers in 2006.

“I know they played a physical, up-tempo hard-working game,” he said.

I wouldn't say "this is a terrible decision," but if it was left vacant and left to be determined until after the season, I wouldn't argue.

Let's not forget there was a good number of people who felt it was an insult to Pronger that Richards didn't relinquish it before the season.

All of this showing what I was afraid of 2 years ago, that it was too much too soon for Richards.

Pronger's quotes make me feel better than Richards' quotes.

Hmm. Seems they're rather happy about getting rid of that assistant coach on the Canes board.

According to Boruk's twitter:

John Boruk | Philadelphia, PA Following

I'm being told that Stevens firing was a Paul Holmgren driven decision, not Ed Snider's.

Well they can have Berube . . . I'm sure they'd be thrilled with that.

now that we know that last night was a decisive game for stevens, and given how unispired the flyers played... while i don't assume coaching was the only problem, it had to be a fairly major one for them to put up so little fight on his behalf.
