He was still under contract to Carolina...meaning: getting paid to not coach. He gives that up if he comes here, so there is no way he's signing on with an "interim" tag.

John Stevens' bizzare stranglehold notwithstanding, there's always an interim tag of sorts on a Flyers coach.

Just about to post that. I bet he signs for two years.

I haven't been around in awhile, I figured this was a good reason to come back. This is crazy!

I mean, I never was a fan of Stevens, but I'm not sure if firing him now will do much. It also makes you wonder what was said in that closed-door meeting yesterday.

At least we'll get some real hockey, no more cakes or locker room rearrangement.

The more I think on it, I'm not sure there are many good candidates for the current roster. This team is in a huge funk right now when guys like Briere are letting the locker room effect their play on the ice. When he is doing the stupid **** that Hartnell and Carcillo do, there's a big problem. I think Laviolette is a good coach for the Flyers which have a high powered offense (when Gagne is back in form, and Briere does what he does best), and could need some help in the defensive zone. But the current situation is not a very good one for most coaches to come into. If they do hire Laviolette, expect some growing pains, as I doubt the team buys into the system right away.

If Laviolette is the coach, he will be the coach through at least the end of next season, if not the season after. Holmgren obviously doesn't like to fire the coach, he likes it less to fire his friends, and Laviolette is also a friend, and the players will be further held accountable.

I'd like to see Stevens stick around to help develop the kids, but I guess there's not much chance of that.

Meanwhile, let's party.

I wouldn't take their word as gospel, but I hope it's true. No confirmation on TSN at this point.

Love it, love it, love it. The Flyers finally did something right by hiring someone outside the organization. HUGE first step. People may frown upon Laviolette, but fact is, he's a winner with the way the game has changed, works well with young players and was nothing more than a goat for Rutherford's incompetence in Carolina. Laviolette is going to be a great fit here.

That sounds very odd. If it's true, I hope it was Richie that offered it and not someone taking it from him. I also hope Richie handles it the way he needs to.
