The more I think on it, I'm not sure there are many good candidates for the current roster. This team is in a huge funk right now when guys like Briere are letting the locker room effect their play on the ice. When he is doing the stupid **** that Hartnell and Carcillo do, there's a big problem. I think Laviolette is a good coach for the Flyers which have a high powered offense (when Gagne is back in form, and Briere does what he does best), and could need some help in the defensive zone. But the current situation is not a very good one for most coaches to come into. If they do hire Laviolette, expect some growing pains, as I doubt the team buys into the system right away.
If Laviolette is the coach, he will be the coach through at least the end of next season, if not the season after. Holmgren obviously doesn't like to fire the coach, he likes it less to fire his friends, and Laviolette is also a friend, and the players will be further held accountable.
Love it, love it, love it. The Flyers finally did something right by hiring someone outside the organization. HUGE first step. People may frown upon Laviolette, but fact is, he's a winner with the way the game has changed, works well with young players and was nothing more than a goat for Rutherford's incompetence in Carolina. Laviolette is going to be a great fit here.
