12/07 - Do you think the Rangers make the playoffs?

A lot of people on the main board have us finishing in the 10 spot. So, my question is this...
Standings
Do you think the Rangers will make the playoffs this year?

PS: I plan on making these at the beggining of every month.

Before the season I saw us as a 6-10 seed. Looking like it might be toward the low end, missing the playoffs.

Yes. The Rangers always pick up their play after February (typically). Don't know how the Olympics will affect them though.

i think we'll have a shot at the 7 or 8 seed, but could very well finish 9, 10 or 11 just the same. i voted no for now...ask me again in a month and i could have a different opinion.

No - before the season; Double No - now. This team needs Antropov, Morris, Mara and Zherdev back in addition to Del Zotto, Gaborik and Prospal to be a playoff contender. To go somewhere in playoffs we'd also need a better goalie, although I consider Lundqvist and Avery as the only true assets left over from last year team.

.

A soft defence, no secondary scoring.

No, I don't think we make the PO's as currently constructed.

Should we remain un-changed from now until the end of the season I'd say that not only do we miss the PO's, but we're looking at a top 10 pick.

I still think we're borderline. Many of us said before the season started that our success would live and die by Gaborik and Lundqvist, that still holds true.

However, right now we're out of a spot and some really good teams are struggling behind us. If teams like Montreal and Philly can get their act together, I think we'll be on the outside looking in.

Just too tough to call right now. Especially if Sather is on the horn trying to work out a deal or two, or twelve.

Too close to call. 6 points separated 6th to 10th last year. 6 points currently separates 6th to 13th. It will be coin toss right down to the last week.

The poll must imply that. Otherwise it would be senseless.

Possibly the 8th Seed.

Can't say I'm too optismitic... the lack of secondary scoring is gonna hurt us if it keeps on being AWOL.

Leaning towards no, but I think we'll just miss. 9th or 10th seed at worst

considering he said that he's going to ask the question every month, he's expecting some changes.

So my comment "Should we remain un-changed" applies today, for this poll.

Should wesomehow acquire the mean nasty defenceman we need and a legit 1st line scoring center in the next 3 weeks things may change come the next time he posts this poll.

Before the season started, I predicted that the Rangers, Habs, Sens, and Thrashers would compete for the 7-8 spots.

I don't see us making it.

Currently, teams in 13th place thru 8th place are all within a point of each other. We are currently 9th. Philly is in 12th place, but has played 3 less games than us. And Tampa Bay is one point ahead of us w one less game. It is too close to call right now.
Besides, no one knows how the Olympics will affect teams. I suspect teams that have more Olympic players are going to play tired and w have more injuries.
The great start to our season is the only thing right now keeping us in the running for 8th spot.

If everyone stays healthy, we get the 8th seed, added players through trades and all.

A week ago I would have voted "NO", but I think our improved attention to defense gives us as good a shot as we had last season.

I seriously hope we don't trade for any players. I think we should just let the season play out and give our young players time to develop. Another Antropov like player is going to cost a decent amount, and it certainly won't make us a contender.

i voted yes but if we do get in, it'll be one of the lower seeds, probably 7 or 8. but the thing with the eastern conference standings over the past couple of years is that its all so close between the lower seeded teams and the teams that fall just short that it's too hard to tell who will make the playoffs. but back on topic with the rangers, theres still plenty of time to turn this around and make a playoff push. i doubt we go deep though

I don't know if I still feel that way any more. I think its become clear that our success will live and die with Hank and our secondary scoring. Gaborik has been pumping in the goals all year long and we have still been losing.

I say yes for now, but that is assuming that we make some moves and get another scorer. I don't think that its possible that this roster stays as it is now for the rest of the season. If torts starts playing Johnson to get ready for Hank being worn out by the Olympics and if Sather can get us a real scorer, I expect that this team will make the playoffs. As I've said in some other threads, the turnover this season is huge and as the season goes on chemistry will develop and the scoring will come. You can't just throw 20 people together on a new team and expect them to gel instantly. There is no way that every single person on this team aside from Gaborik and Propsal are going to have the worst seasons of their careers.

Also, everyone slumps. The flyers, who were the recipients of an unbelievable amount of (what i felt to be) unwarranted praise to start this season suddenly don't look so hot. Surprise surprise. If I had a dollar for every comment in a GDT that was "wait till the flyers come, they'll show how bad we really are" or "If only we were tough like the Flyers we could win" I'd be a very rich man and yet they are doing worse than we are. They get stomped by an OVless Washington team that we took to 7 games with OV in the lineup every night. Thats the nature of the game. This team will be better before its all said and done.

To sum it up, if we get another scorer, if we start to prepare for Hank being worn out from the olympics and if the rookie continue to mature at their current pace, this team will be playing into the spring. If none of those things happen within the next few months, its a crap shoot.

Lastly, when Redden comes back Sather has to find a way to give Rozy the boot and keep Ilkka up, he's shown himself to be far more responsible on the defensive side of the puck than Rozy has and he makes a small fraction of the money.
