Blackhawks & Islanders

as a fan of neither of these teams I hope this is as objective as possible... I think the Hawks and Islanders make good trading partners for several reasons... the biggest ones being the Hawks need to move some contracts and the Isles are said to be willing to add salary in hopes of pushing for the playoffs...

so here goes nothing...

to New York Islanders:
F - Kris Versteeg ($3,083,333 RFA-2012)
D - Cam Barker ($3,083,333 RFA-2012)

to Chicago Blackhawks:
F - Doug Weight ($2,200,000 UFA-2010)
D - Andy Sutton ($3,000,000 UFA-2010)
2nd in 2010
3rd in 2011

saves the Hawks 6.166 million in cap space next year... Weight can put up similar numbers to Versteeg for the remainder of this season... Sutton could be servicable in a 3rd pairing role... then the Hawks would gain a couple picks to try and balance the trade a bit...the Isles would land a couple good young players... and while adding some contracts they would be staying with their rebuildng plan

I'll be the first to say that the Blackhawks are getting the worst end of the deal. I'll let the other explain how come.

Weight is at the end of his career and would only get a Bill Guerin type of return (3rd round pick) Sutton isn't that good. 2nd and 3rd rounders don't even turn out to be good prospects sometimes, let alone good NHL'ers. Hawks would be trading 2 good young players for almost nothing, imo.

Hawks could get at least a package of good young prospects or 1st round picks for either of those young players, imo.

of course they are getting the worse end... there is no doubt... but its like the Ducks sending Andy McDonald to the Blues... the Hawks have to clear salary for next season before they can officially sign all three of Keith, Kane and Toews to tehir extensions... they have put themselves in a spot where they aren't going to get market value

Throw a mid to high level prospect in heading back to the Blackhawks.

No way Chicago would make this trade. They're trying to win a cup this year and both positions would be downgraded.

It never made sense...

Barker is not the D-man the Isles need. I'm not that high on Versteeg. And, yet, the Blackhawks get crushed on value.

It makes sense for neither team.

Cheers,

Dan-o

can both sides agree to this ASAP?!? I'll drive to Chicago with Sutton and Weight and bring Barker and Versteeg back! Do it if I'm the Isles.

Hawks wouldn't ever do this though, they aren't getting enough back. I think they would want someone like Nielsen instead of Weight, because Nielsen is a very serviceable center who is pretty good in all zones and makes $525,000 thru 2012.

Hawks would never do that, although it does save them $6 million in cap space.

At the least we would be have to be getting Bailey in return and since that isn't happening, No.

To Anaheim:
D Cam Barker ($3.08M)
F Kris Versteeg ($3.08M)

To Chicago:
F Saku Koivu ($3.25M)
D Nick Boynton ($1.5M)
2010 1st round pick

Both Koivu and Boynton are UFA's at the end of the year. Anaheim continues to get younger and better.

Hawks add two veterans on expiring deals for the playoffs along with 1st round pick.

Hawks get fleeced in this trade, but when the playoffs come this year I'd rather have Sutton on my blueline than Barker.

Normally wouldn't say that, but Sutton's been a very, very strong defensive d-man for the Isles this year. I'd rather have him behind Seabrook, Keith and Campbell than Barker this year.

The rest of the deal is really skewed in the Isles favor

Over the past few weeks we've seen countless proposals linking Chicago and the Isles but I don't really see them as making good trade partners. Yes the Blackhawks have contracts and the Isles have cap space, but the Isles don't really have many available players who would help Chicago win this year. In terms of trade chips they aren't that compatible.

Maybe in the offseason I could see a deal going down between them, but not now.

the hawks wont make their deals to unload players until the offseason. Stop trying to pick off barker, steeg, and buff

I concur. They need to dump salary but will do so in the off season. They have gone the longest of any team without a SC and have a great chance at it this year, why jeopordize that? I suspect they will put a push on for this year and why would they bring in worse players to do so? Worry about next year after the push this year.
