I can buy Ottawa having interest in Souray. (Especially since it's Garrioch reporting it.) I can't see them trading Spezza right now. Anyone trading for Souray is in "win now" mode, or at least "win in the near future". They're going to be giving up young guys, picks, whatever. Which is good, since that's what we need. I hope.

Have you looked at his stats lately?

Garrioch is Eklund v2.0

Souray isn't heading east... we've had this discussion multiple times. IF he were to move, he'd be going west.

The Oilers wont be trading Souray at this point in the season. With Hemsky on LTIR there is no emergent need for cap relief, and with the Oilers still having 50+ games to play the playoffs are still very much in the picture. Souray is too important to this club to be moved atm unless it is for an amazing return.

I know. But I still don't see it happening. Just my opinion, I've been wrong before.

GM's don't look at a young fringe superstar in his prime, see a 30 game dip in production and then unload them for anything.

That is what HF board members do

That said he has never been a favorite of Murray's and he's signed for a pretty penny. I believe that if the right deal came up Murray would be more than happy to rid himself of Jason.

Souray
Cogliano

For

Volchenkov (extended? or is he worth too much that way?)
Cheechoo
1st Round Pick

Add in additional picks/prospects to balance the deal if needed.

Ottawa gets two players that can come in and help immediately, with Cogliano EASILY replacing Cheechoo's minutes. Souray will definitely help Ottawa's power play (22nd overall) and can play defense, despite popular opinion.

Oilers get a much needed shut down d man who will be a huge addition to our defense. We have an in house replacement for Shelly on the PP and that is Visnovsky. Cheechoo is a pure salary dump who will be a 'UFA' in the summer. Oilers clear a little bit of salary in the summer while gaining a key piece moving forward.

Am I way off base value wise?

***Obviously Souray's NTC is the biggest issue***

Souray
Cogliano

for

Filatov
Hejda

Maybe add in Modin if the BJs want to dump additional salary, we'll take him for a year.

Souray for Filatov. Add a pick or fringe prospect if need-be. Can't be trying to solve problems this year, need to dive!

Maybe the management team has also caught Dive fever.
I swear the ottawa sun gets so much attention for these garbage rumors it throws out and they never happen. Remember that 3 way deal that was supposedly going down involving Meszaros Kopitar and Khabibulin?

Well...look at it this summer
Heatley > Spezza
Smid < Souray
Cogliano = Cogliano
and Penner was considered a salary dump

Back at the 04 deadline we saw a silhouette of Eklund...no way he could be Garrioch

Ottawa is in a playoff race and just traded Heatley, why would they trade their franchise center for an older defenseman and an unproven young center? Wouldn't sit too well with their fanbase..... Doesn't make much sense to me unless Spezza demanded a trade

Someone (I want to say it was Brownlee but if I'm wrong he'd hunt me down to smack me for it, so I'll just say someone) said that the difference with Garrioch is he reports everything he hears. If another reporter heard a rumour, he'd try to find out if it was true, or at least if other people had heard the same thing, etc. Garrioch just runs with it, and the Sun's fine with that because people read it. So a lot of what he says never happens because it was just in the "someone talked about this once" category, not like "this trade almost happened!" kind of thing.

I like reading his stuff about other teams, it's only when the Oilers get involved that I'm all, "That's ridiculous!!"

Isn't that what Philly did a couple years ago?
The Difference is that Philly had Forsberg and fleeced Nashville.

Souray is not useless either. I'd want him around for our younger guys, because he is Captain material.

Why unload our vets so quickly? So we can have a team of youngsters with Hemsky to look up to?

I totally agree with this. (Minus the shot at Hemsky.) That's why we need to keep Lubo.

I like Souray on the Oilers roster however something like this might make sense to management:

Bobby Ryan for Sheldon Souray

This is like trading Hemsky to LA for Sean O'Donnell. We'd have to add a lot to Souray to even begin negotiations for Bobby Ryan.
