Has anyone tried the ribcap?

I'm thinking of buying one for when I'm practicing my skating as i do no like to wear a helmet. I don't usually fall backwards, the one time I did was during shinny practice which I always wore a hockey helmet for, but I just like the idea of having a little bit of extra protection, I'd just like some assurance it is actually much more protective than a regular thick hat.
