Don't pay too much.

If you can't find it for free, go to http://www.hockeystreams.com/ and buy a one day membership for $6.99 or something.

It gets you access to the entire season's archives and you can watch it as a stream.

And it wasn't that great a game anyway.....

If you're talking like a Comcast DVR, you cannot extract the data without hacking the DVR box. Physically, all the stuff is there for you to pull DVR'd material off of the thing just like any other HD, but they turn it off so that you can't do that (for obvious reasons: they don't want you DVRing stuff and then distributing it).

Not sure about some of the other DVR options out there...obviously if you build your own DVR through a computer, this is a different story.

I have not screwed around with that stuff personally (but do understand how it works in detail). May look into it at some future date if I put together a serious entertainment room. Given the cheap cost of disk space, you can put together a massive digital library of content with ease.

Yeah definitely. Outside of the tuner card, I put mine together entirely with spare parts that were laying around or I found in discard piles. I only record like 3-4 shows a week since my card is kinda old and hulu is better quality, but I haven't had to delete anything in well over a year and my hard drive still has tons of space left. It's definitely the way to go if you know what you're doing with the stuff. Given how easy MythBuntu is to setup, it's not hard at all. I've heard good things about the stuff for Macs too, but my mac mini is too old to want to spend money on given my law student budget, so I haven't had the chance to try any of that.
