I'm still in the Lee fan club, he's two years younger, and I like him a lot better then Picard. IMO, he's far better then Picard defensively, and he has a good first pass that will get better. Picard has the better shot, but once Lee puts on more muscle it will get better. I may be wrong on this, and i'm hoping Fuhr or TMV will know, but Lee basically took over Volchenkov's spot on the shutdown pairing over guys like Commodore, Schubert, Meszaros in his first year, and Kuba, Picard, Schubert, in his second year call ups.

I cringe when Picard is on the ice.

He did, much like Lee started off the year in Bingo.

Both were given a chance to play with the big club and Picard made the most of it.

I'd ask you the same question. It's easy to see why CC had him benched to start the season. The guy has constant brain cramps. He also has only 2 goals. Like Lee.

All that PP time and two goals. We need more.
Picard has an all-star shot, but all the tools in the world can't help him if has no hockey IQ.

Picard is on a one way contract, Lee on a 2 way. Hence Lee in the minors.

He's traded before the new year. Unless he's actually really injured than I don't see how he comes out of this, the whole thing is just too weird. He's got EVERY right to be pissed and I don't blame him for lashing out at either Clouston or Murray. He's frustrated and probably doesn't understand what he's gotta do to stay with the big club. If Murray can give him a chance elsewhere, he should definitely do so.

Would there even be any chance to get Filatov back into the NHL this year or would we have to wait until next season (which is what I assume would be the case)?

Yesterday, Filatov flew home. The Blue Jackets agreed to loan him to CSKA Moscow of the Continental Hockey League for the remainder of season.

The organization's decision to allow Filatov, 19, to return to his former Russian club for one season comes with a written contract, but no guarantees.

The Jackets yesterday announced they had agreed to loan the winger to CSKA Moscow of the Continental Hockey League (KHL). With no player transfer agreement in place between the NHL and KHL, however, Filatov can remain in Russia as long as he desires.

In essence, the Jackets have a handshake deal with Filatov, CSKA and its coach-general manager Sergei Nemchinov.

"All we have given him is the right to stay for this season," Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said. "I'm not going to deal with a hypothetical situation involving next season. Our belief is he intends to come back here in the fall."

Filatov is expected to sign a three-year deal with CSKA. That contract would not prevent him from returning to the Jackets, who own his NHL rights.

Plus the fact that Picard has been much much better than Lee this season.

there being no transfer agreement - he can come and go as he likes.

You'd think any team trading for him would want to talk to him and his agent first though....

I guess we have different views on these two.

i believe that in theory filatov could come back this year, but we wouldnt be able to force him to make that decisioin, which is the problem with having no transfer agreement. If ottawa traded lee for filatov and then asked him to come play on michalek-spezza's wing, i think it would be awfully hard for filatov to say no.

That's pretty much exactly how I read it.

Filatov has to go on waivers to play again in the NHL this year, just like Wade Dubielewicz did last year.

Is that the case even for waiver-exempt players? I think you're right, but the only reason I wasn't positive is because even though he has played overseas, he is still on his ELC.

Randy Robitaille had to go on waivers to come play for us a couple years back and I bet you guys are glad he didn't get claimed! Think of the lost memories!

I think waivers only apply to players playing in Europe who subsequently sign NHL contracts.

Filatov is under NHL contract but has been loaned to CSKA. Theoretically Columbus (or whoever owns his rights at that time) should be able to recall him whenever.

I think that would only be if Ottawa signed him, in this case Filatov would already be signed.

There is no such distinction being made. You play in Europe or the KHL, you need to clear waivers to play in the NHL in the same year.

Note that there is no mention of contract status. It's pretty cut and dry.

This has been in place even since before the current CBA. There were players even before the lockout who would play in pre-season games in Europe but wouldn't be allowed to play in the NHL if they played a regular season game.

It's the same deal that's happening in Nashville with Radulov, except that in this case Columbus gave their consent.

Didn't Dallas recall Tom Wandell from Sweden last year?

Look into Tom Wandell from last year. He was loaned to Timra but recalled by Dallas when they had injury issues. No waivers.

Interesting. I'll look into it later, have to head out now.

I still don't believe he would be able to just come back, nor would he want to.
