Jacques Demers says 3-4 teams closely monitoring Halak

http://www.corussports.com/hockey/no...s-1872671.html

Quote:

It's a given that Halak will be traded at some point. He's good, he'll want to be a #1 and we already have another great goalie. I just hope Gainey doesn't do it too soon. We'll need to acquire a decent back-up in case Price gets injured, I don't know about Sanford.

Which teams would be interested? Philly?

And rightfully so...he's one of the best #2 guy in the league...

IMO we have to trade him by the trade deadline, he wants, he deserves and he should be a starter next year so he's not re-signing here next summer.

I would think Detroit is one of them.

With DiPietro coming back soon, the Isles will be stuck with 3 goalies, maybe one of them is moved here, like Biron for a pick could be an option for us

That's the problem right there.

Did someone tell him that, or did he read it???

Makes a world of difference

He's an RFA. No need to trade him right now. We need a solid, inexpensive backup this year. You really want to go into the playoffs with Sandford if Price gets injured? Besides, it motivates Price.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Halak moved this year either. Seems like the going rate for young goalies with potential is a 2nd rounder(Giguere, Kiprusoff) so I think that's what we can expect. In a deep draft this year that would be OK with me.

I would just like to acquire a veteran backup for Price. Not sure what the best way to do that is, seems like all the good choices are either retired(Thibault, Weekes) or out of the NHL(McLennan). You need a backup who knows his role and won't complain about it and can give you good performances when necessary,

Goalies have ZERO value or next to it I do not know why but I think we all know its the case.
What did Luongo get? Bryzgalov? and to a lesser extent Huet which Gainey absolutely stole a 2nd rounder for.

We can't afford to trade Halak until the Habs start giving up less shots on a consistent basis. Our goalies "save the game" getting 40+ shots against more often then not. The days of settling for a decent backup are over. You can't rest your #1 against "easy" teams anymore. The difference between the #3 team and the #12 team are are much less then they used to be. Can you imagine Sanford getting pummeled with 45 shots against?

The good/bad news is there's a lot of decent to more then decent goalies around. The bad news is it has killed any value in trading your backup. Would Philly give up a 1st for Halak when they could pick up Leighton for nothing? History says no.

Philly would definitely overpay for Halak as they overpay for most players.

Jeeze, whatever we do, there's just no way of dissociating Halak from a 2nd pick.

I was actually half serious, I mean, some say he read that somewhere like everyone else... but he can't read, so the obvious deduction is that someone told him. Someone in the 'know' maybe.

Honestly I would not trade him..Habs probably couldn't trade him for the same or more then what they could get if he got an offer sheet
Try and sign him in the summer, but if he wants to sign somewhere else during the summer so be it and take the picks

Goalie value is a bit higher this year then last. Several teams still lack a true #1 and some are looking for young goalies. Toronto have Guvstafson but I'm sure they would love another young goalie. Teams like Philly, Detroit could use another goalie. If we can make a trade that would get us an aging backup + a draft pick then I would be happy. I wouldn't be happy for just a 2nd round pick. Regardless of his value, he's more valuable to us right now then a 2nd round pick, might as well keep him.

Tough call for Gainey, reminiscent of Huet situation.

You have to trade Halak during summer anyways, he's gonna get a decent raise, and habs have no cap room to give both goalies raises.

Do you trade him now for more, to a team desperate for goaltending when he's at peak value? Or hold onto him until the summer, getting useful starts out of him occasionally (like last night), and as an insurance policy against Price getting injured?

Really tough call, the habs will be in for a tough fight to the playoffs. If Price gets injured and we have to start Sanford and he is mediocre, it could equal valuable points lost in the race.

On the other hand, if there are 3-4 teams desperate for goaltending, and offering nice premiums for Halak, Gainey could hardly be blamed for picking up a future assets in a trade. During the summer he won't be nearly as valuable when lots of veteren UFA goalies go for the cheap (guys like Nitti & Biron getting less than $1.5m).

Feel bad for Gainey, cuz either one is an OK strategy, but will be open to years of 20/20 hindsight scrutiny (like Huet). My guess though is he'd keep Halak for insurance unless he gets a great, can't refuse offer.

Well you don't have to be genius to know that a few teams are watching Halak.

Someone better offer up a good big center for Halak or he is going nowhere.
If anybody thinks they are going to steal him of the Habs for a song because he is unproven as a number 1 goalie think again.
If you don't want to pay then don't bother to ask.

WOW News why? Is it a surprise.
Anyway I think Gainey would be stupid to trade Halak at this point regardless of what you get in return (unless you get a reliable VET back up goalie.. which is rare.. and stupid to trade goalie for goalie)

He needs to keep him until atleast the deadline and see if your going to make it into the playoffs..

If Price goes down... you REALLY want to rely on Sanford as your #1?

Demers said that a scout from a Western Team asked him a lot of questions about Halak. I think that the team is Detroit, because Dermers is an ex-coach of Detroit and they must trust him.

Detroit would make a lot of sense.

Jimmy Howard hasn't been the guy they had hoped for and Osgood is fading.

I doubt it's Detroit. Howard has been doing fine.
