What could the Habs get for Halak + Subban? That might bring in a worthwhile player.

The team in the West with the greatest need or fit for a goalie is the LA Kings.

Quick does not seem THAT bad but he must be the weakest of the starting goalies in the west no?

Those who mention goalies do not fetch much in trades are absolutely right.

Gainey is unlikely to package anyone with Halak unless it is for an interesting IMMEDIATE IMPACT return...

Don't think he'll be traded until the summer. No matter how you analyze it, we still need a backup goalie, not just to play backup, but as insurance. It doesn't make any sense to create a hole in the lineup that will have to be filled with another trade, probably at similar cost.

a Backes for Halak + Metro ( i know everybody loves Metro, but Backes on his own has more value then Halak) trade could do wonders for us. Imagine a line-up of..

Backes-Gomez-Gionta
Cammalleri-Plekanec-Kostitsyn
Maxpac-Pouliot-S.Kost
Moen-Lappierre-Laraque

Simply unbelievable!

Somehow this adds a tangible quality to some of the air filled proposals seen in this thread.

Those who mention that also fail to mention that goalies rarely get moved as RFAs, especially if they're good and definitely ready to start in the NHL. Montreal is just incredibly, and unusually, lucky to have 2.

I don't know what gives you that impression, especially with the logjam up front already, but it's certainly not a fact. Someone who will be ready next year, after the dust from this year's UFA situation has settled, would be perfectly fine.

The last thing St.Louis is looking for are UFAs at the end of their career. That's almost negative trade value to them right now, so you can forget about that right now.

I love the way Desjardins plays. One day he will play in the NHL, and could become a #1 at that.
I've also been a believer in Desjardins, and young goalies in general. Teams can only have one #1 goalie so there are many capable ones who can slip through the cracks. The Canadiens are a perfect example, they've been able to draft and develop young goalies very efficiently (Theodore, Vokoun, Garon, Price, Halak, even Danis).

St-Louis matched an offer sheet Vancouver put in for Backes 2 offseasons ago...I really doubt they let him go for a talent, albeit unproven goalie. Backes was one of their better players last year down the stretch and a big reason why they had a resurgence.

They're not letting him go...not for Halak at least

I think maybe Halak will eventually move, but now is not the best time. I would wait until the trade deadline when teams have a clearer understanding of what they need going forward, based on injuries and standings.

I believe Halak will have much more value at the deadine, and I hope we can go after a big center which would help the little giants we have now, there are a variety of teams which will dump or add salary at the deadline. This is a major talent draft year with 3-5 potentials for number 1 and there is one current team which I believe could use a good young goaltender and can add a replacement at center via the draft..my prediction........................Je suis...............Eric Staal. We would send a package that includes Halak, both Kostitsyn's, D'agostini and our top pick for this year. I think this is a legit offer.. feel free to criticize.

Maybe a 2nd rounder or a good prospect
Would you do it then? That's more realistic, and not even taking into consideration clearing the cap space needed to ensure he's signed. Even then, it would be worth considering for Kovalchuk, in my opinion. Atlanta has no reason to get rid of him.

And to the poster above me, that is a very interesting proposal from the Habs side. I'm not sure how keen the Canes would be to do that, but I would do it. The mythical big center, who also has a Cup to his name. With Brandon Sutter playing well and, as you mentioned, a probable top pick, the future looks good even without Eric Staal, so the depth could be welcome. Who knows.

Make it a conditional 1st rounder and I say do it.

halak for a top 6 forward? halak for guillaume

in all seriousness, im all for trading halak with 2 conditions:

1- we get a decent backup goalie in return ala conklin or garon

2- we get an ESTABLISHED top 6 forward in return, meaning not a pouliot, sergei, pacioretty or d'agostini type with potential but who have not yet established themselves as consistent 2nd line nhlers, so i propose we ship halak with one of the forementioned players (preferably dagostini) for a real top 6 forward, and even add a pick or a prospect like weber or carle to make the deal happen...

dreaming is fun

Subban has 10 pts in his last 9 games. He may possibly be the only blue chipper in our system. I'd say he's untouchable.

St. Louis sucks because they're missing leadership, they need more veterans in the line-up, Metro brings that, at a cheap salary too.

You have to assume the Canadiens will do everything they can to make sure a player like Kovalchuk is signed if ever it comes to him being dealt here. No way they'd let him go to free agency. Neither would the Thrashers for that matter, which is why it would take a gigantic package.

If Halak + Subban bring in someone who stars for the Habs, we can remember the names of those two with undying gratitude.

Sam Pollock gave up 3 players for Frank Mahovlich. One of them was Mickey Redmond, a future 50-goal scorer, yet Pollock was extemely happy with a trade that contributed importantly to the 1971 and 1973 Cup wins. A little perspective: Subban is a hot prospect but he isn't Bobby Orr.

You're kidding right... David Backes for a goalie who has yet to prove himself as a number 1 ? I will give you sure he has played really good in the back up role but it's different when you're playing 50 to 60 games a year. If I was Detroit or St.Louis the most I would give up would be a 2nd and a B prospect. I'm not sure you're going to get anyone on a roster because Detroit has high expectations and why would they get rid of someone off their roster for a unproven goalie, St.Louis do they really need a goalie. Personally, I like Chris Mason.
