12/11/09 Are you a Penner supporter?

So great discussion yesterday! I wanted to pipe in on it, but I was running around trying to make the most of my last full day out here. I wonder if we will get much with today's topic which is pretty much the same as yesterday's.

ok, so when the offer sheet got extended to Penner after the Nylander incident, this girl was tickled pink! When i first heard Dustin's interview after the time had expired and he was an Oiler he sounded so genuine, so grateful to have a chance to playin Edmonton where they thought that he was worth something and where he could be a great player... well I was even more excited. I listened at my desk at work and my ear to ear grin just kept getting biggere and bigger. His first season i chalked it up to nerves and high expectations. I knew that next season would be better. Ultimately I always knew that he could be a great player for us and just patiently awaited his development.

But, I have to admit that I am still just a silly girl. Living in Calgary and openly being an Oilers fan I have to defend the team, the coaching staff, management and results to anyone who sees my heart that's sitting right there on my sleeve. i still defend Moreau and beleive that he is doing some good. This is the team that I have to love and cheer for, and there is nothing I can do but support them is the way I look at it. I know that there is the arguement that as a fan if I don't let the management know my displeasure nothing will change. Maybe if I was a wealthy lawyer or doctor I could have an affect, but I'm not. So, I'll keep cheering away for every man who gets to wear the Oilers uniform on NHL ice, no matter what.

Got frustrated with him last year but was turned around last year too by some of David Staples' articles defending him and have been supporting him ever since. I was hoping he would bring a better game this year but didn't really expect him to be anywhere near where he is now.

"* Ethan Moreau is slowly picking up his play. He'll never again be a dominant player as he was for brief stretches in his prime. But if he's healthy, he has shown in the past dozen games that he can help his team win, and I have to admit, I never thought I'd again see him to that. " -Staples

If Moreau is healthy.. I wouldnt even have him on out AHL team.. Stone, Jacques, Potulny, Brule and Stortini do everything he can and more for less then half the price..
Moreau's turnover at the end of the last game was the final straw for me.. He by far the worst Oiler.

As much as I love what he is doing this year, I'm still not sold on him. He's going to have to put in a full season of this type of hockey to convince me after the way he has played as an Oiler.

Always was, while I have been disappointed with him he has always shown glimpses of being a dominate power forward. He just does it more now.

I did last year say trade him, but my reason was because if the coach isn't going to use him then bring in someone else that the coach will use.

The one thing that always made me support him was Burke paying Bertuzzi similar money. I figured at least our GM isn't as stupid as Burke, at least we have someone with potential that isn't injury prone.

Penner has been solid all year. I'd be very happy with a 30 to 35 goal/65-75 point season. Those are very solid numbers.

Penner is on a push, pull or drag mission to help his team win hockey games so far. I've always believed he's got that type of game to offer...BUT...I voted: He still needs work...

He's got to do this for the full season.

I believe he MIGHT do it. But seeing is belieivng.

The longer it goes on the more likely for it to continue. That said I see the same player as before that's a little quicker and a lot more confident.

I voted I am now.

I admit whole heartedly that I was in the chorus of complainers when it came to Penner. It was so frustrating to see the disinterested Penner going through the motions last year.

After he got benched for the one game, he came back and had a great outing. That made it even worse for me, as he showed us for one night what he was capable of. He then went back to being the invisible big man with what appeared to be no heart. After the end of last season and the Heater trade/No Trade, I was so happy when I heard Ottawa was willing to take Penner. To me at least this was addition by subtraction.

I WAS WRONG

This year he has played great overall. He's far exceeded my expectations. He's shown effort every game, commitment, a willingness to go to the net, and he's using his size as an asset rather then a liability. He has been by far our best forward, and has been the biggest surprise to me of any Oiler. Its a good thing I'm not in charge, as I would have been willing to give Penner away to any team that was willing to take him.

He's definatley NOT adding any meanness to his game. He's not that guy who always shows up to the game in an aggresive, piss & vinegar frame of mind.

Thing is...this Oilers roster has (when healthy) a handful of others who ARE on the team to provide that part of it, therefore, Penner's finesse is finding room that wasn't there before.

I always would have liked to have gotten Vanek instead. Penner's #'s tower over Vaneks right now.

IMO he's playing even less snarly than he was before, however Quinn lets him do what he does best while filling the lineup with other guys that are happy to do that job. The thing is he doesn't need to play like Lucic to be effective, he's still able to use his size and skill to a great advantage to the Oil.

I was honestly one of the few that had it the other way around. 4 first round picks is a steep price to pay for anyone not named Crosby, Malkin, or Ovechkin.

I have always liked Penner but thought that his play could have been better, he was frustrating to watch over the last couple of years. This year he is actually showing what type of player he can actually be, he has bought into the idea that he is actually an exceptional power forward. He is using his size and wow he is like a freight train now. He just needed to believe in himself and for the coaching staff to believe in him. I think that if any player on the Oilers has benefited from a new coaching regime it would be Dustin Penner.

Thanks BB for all the hard work....BTW I met a seamstress who may make a set of Queen sheets for me, let me know if you are interested and I will get a cost, I just need to find the material.

I fall somewhere in between the "I am now" and the "Always was" category...... I liked Penner in Anaheim and really thought he could be a good player for us but after his first couple of years here, i was worried that he just didn't care enough to be a good player so i kind of soured on him like most people here did, i never in my wildest dreams thought he would be as good as he has been this year.
I gotta say though that BBO called for an offer sheet to be thrown out to Penner even before the Vanek offer sheet so props to him.

i hated the dude - with good reason.
it took him two full seasons to "develop" like this because he had a massive stick up his ass.

im 100% glad he turned it around and actually plays a more mature game. but theres no way in hell he needed to be "supported" with the attitude and effort he brought the first two years of the contract.

he needs to keep this game the rest of his career in the NHL. a flash in the pan season would be a complete let down.

I call BS.

People have very convenient memories. There were a handful of Penner Supporters last year.

It is like Penner said himself, many people have come up to him and said "Great year, I supported you all along" He just laughs.

Me too!

Many of you are liars (tounge in cheek, I think it is funny)

Or maybe some of us god tired of all the ******** that is spewed by the so called respected posters that most of us have given up on posting because of it. Maybe some of us were supporters but would rather keep it to ourselves because of the ignorance that flurishes on this site.

Maybe some of us realized that Penner is a 25 goal player and didnt have any reason to thump our chest like certain posters
