Absolutely. He's made tremendous strides in his 2nd year playing on North America.

He could play next year, but ideally he'll play 60 games for the Phantoms next year and then join the Flyers the following season.

Antero Niittymaki could be the backup on some teams right now.

If he dominates next year in the AHL like he has the last few months, he will likely be the backup the year after.
Just a hunch, no inside info.

I dont think he should even have to spend another year in the AHL. I think he's ready to start backing up Esche right now. Two years in the AHL to adjust to the style, and has been one of the best goalies in that league. At this point he needs time against better shooters if he is going to continue to develop.

Without a shadow of a doubt. He sparkled in 3 games vs a couple tough teams. If Burke's a no-show at camp next year... Heck, even if he IS in camp, I'd at least let Niitts and Burkey battle it out for the backup spot. Only because Burke has that best friend/mentor thing going on with Esche.

If Esche doesnt blow up, Id love to see both Burke and the Flyers not pick up next years option so Niity can be a backup for the Flyers next year.

Not only does he have great NHL potentail, but he is probably the most underrated goalie prospect leaguewide, and this is coming from someone who hates the Flyers.

Hopefully down the road we will see some classic goalie duels between Fleury and Niittymaki.

... with Fleury coming out on top of course.

YES

playing in the NHL is a no-brainer but to what level he will play at (franchise goalie, ok starter, backup, etc) is the question.

it will be interesting to see how he plays in camp next year.

BTW, the poll is currently 27-0 for yes.

I hope he does great.
He has been one of the best for the last half of this year in the AHL.
He was pretty good in 40 games last year and played in 49 this year.
He needs to start and play in 65-70 next year to improve.
His save pct this yr. .924 (Little .920)
Yes he is a very good prospect, I do not think he would benefit from riding behind Esche at this point. So we differ.
I still think he will play AHL stud next year, then up to the NHL.

YES.
Definitively. Niittymäki has an NHL future in front of him. He has all the tools. I guess he could be Chico's back next season, but another year in the AHL could be also useful. Well, all will depend on the existence of a season next year though...

BTW, it's 40-0 now!

after we leave burke go, maybe sign a veteran goalie whom we won't feel guilty sending to the ahl, then mid-season antero can be called up and start a few games.

he'll definitely start in the AHL next season, but the sky is the limit

They got Roman and he is a wash.
We need Nitty as a backup, he's got the goods for the NHL. I'm 99.9% sure we'll keep him.
