Olympic Flyers - Team Before Country?

Although the olympics happen only every 4 years, there is always a debate around the NHL regarding the detrimental effect on the season, wether the argument is schedule based, or possible injury to players but i have a diffrent angle to this.

i belive this who is playing so far....

Pronger (Canada)
Richards (Canada)
Timonen (Finland)
Bartulis (Latvia)
Carter (Canada)

with the state of our team now, should the players on this team forego their opportunity to play? pronger has won the gold, kimmo won a silver and bronze, so they had their opportunity to play for their contry, its not like time is running out for them... the rest are young and will have more chances to play. Do you think Richards as a captain should say no and take those few weeks off to get this team going?

No way Richards and Carter make the team this time around. Even if they were playing well enough I would definitely want to see them play, it's their right.

sure its their right now, but before 1988 they wouldnt have been eligible... i think some people would see these guys as being so young theyll get more then enough chances

I think Richards will make it, not Carter though.

Im not worried about the injuries and all that, as I enjoy the idea of ametuer athletes getting a shot on the big stage. may be their only chance at accomplishing anything. Thats a bigger story than a team full of canadian stanley cup winners dominating, with the US and Russia closely in tow. Id rather Canada dominate with nobodies. The 1980 US Olympic Hockey team creates a magic we will never see again.

I think Kimmo should heal, or get himself into mental shape. Before Prongs, he was our main defenseman and could really factor into games. This year he is very much invisible.

The national team isn't more important, but this is an opportunity of a lifetime, especially for the Canadian players.

Should any of the Flyers be named to their respective national teams, I fully support them going to the Olympics.

Right now at least, these guys couldn't spell win if I spotted them the W and the I. So I want them all going for the sake of improving team USA's chances.

Richards has played his way off my Team Canada. I think he was on it before, but when Canada has Thornton, Crosby, Brad Richards, Lecavalier, Toews, Savard, he needs to be playing at a high level all season.

Pronger, Timonen, Bartulis and Tollefsen are all locks unless they get hurt. Carle I think still has a decent chance to make the team, but they can also do better.

Canada-Norway is the first game in the group I think, will be interesting to see Pronger and Tollefsen play against each other

You're paid to win games and championships in the NHL, not medals at the olympics.

Let them play in the Olympics. I think some would change their opinion if those names had US in the parenthesis.

good to see sense on the Flyers board. Everyone else seems to want to see a bunch of millionaires hang out at the Olympics and possibly pick up a medal to add to their collections.

Fans pay good money to see NHL hockey played - not guys tired/wired or injured from Olympic play.

And I agree that only amateurs should be competing at the olympics.

The players should show some class on this issue re:CBA . But they won't.

I think you're ignoring the different priorities of most US fans...Stanley Cup over Olympic gold any day of the week.

thats not really the case, because team sports in olympics are not our forte, people other coutries would freak out more if their stars couldnt play. that arguement can go both ways.

You may be right. I still think opinions might be different if the US team had assets on par with team Canada and we're favored to go into the medal rounds. Don't ignore the patriotism of US fans either.

They should go...

I want my country the best chance at winning, and their best chance is with the best players.. those players included are Richards, Pronger and Carter

I understand Lord Stanley is important, and its "their job"... but everyteam is losing players, not just the flyers.

If the players want to go and represent their country, they should go and do that... if I had their talent, I certainly would LOVE the chance to play for my country, who are we to knock them or say "its your job stay home"... sorry... NONE OF US will ever know what it feels like to get olympic gold, espically on your home countries soil... its a rare and special chances... and I feel its selfish on fan's part to expect these players to forfeit that oppertunity.

theres so many other facets of the olympics that nationalism lives and breaths well. the majority of US olympic viewers will care for others sports in the olympics. a good example is the summer olympics, and baseball and the world classic.. theres no question the US had a very dominated team on paper, yet the nationalism wasnt there as it was for phelps & co.

Which literally only manifests itself for two weeks once every 4 years....the rest of the time no one cares. As opposed to the 82+playoff games I watch of the Flyers every single year...my level of investment in the NHL is multiple orders of magnitude higher than that of the Olympics.

On top of that, you're seeming to ignore that US sports fans favorite plot line is the underdog. Maybe you missed that the interest in the Dream Team is pretty friggin low for Olympic basketball at this point...they won, they're supposed to win. It's only a story when they lose.

So, I would hesitate before turning this into some sort of petulant attitude towards the fact that the US team isn't that great... I would love to see the NHL/NHLPA develop the World Cup of Hockey into a legit, consistent tournament. I hate that they break the NHL season and risk significant injuries to play the Olympics.

Although winning the Stanley Cup would be fabulous, this team is not doing it unless they get their chemistry problems solved and actually start playing like a team.

I say if nothing changes by mid January, the season will be lost and I don't really care who plays in the Olympics.
