Next backup: Cloutier?

http://www.nypost.com/p/cloutier_cou...CH8kqyocMzkBoO

Perhaps the answer to both the Rangers' backup goaltending situation that John Tortorella called, “a mess,” following this morning’s practice and the team's lack of toughness might be found in the same place.

That would be Rockford, Ill., where Dan Cloutier, the pugilistic one-time Blueshirts’ netminder, is attempting a comeback on a PTO with the AHL Ice Hogs after an 18-month layoff following a pair of hip surgeries.

Cloutier, the Blueshirts’ 1994 first-round Entry Draft selection, is famously and fondly remembered by Ranger Nation for challenging the Islanders’ bench in his hockey skivvies after beating up Tommy Salo during a brawl at the Coliseum on Apr. 4, 1998.

Now 33, Cloutier has played one game since signing with the Ice Dogs. Well, make that part of one game, for the netminder received a match penalty 26:22 into last Sunday’s match against Manitoba for getting involved in a fight after he’d been knocked down by Guillaume Desbiens.

Cloutier played one game in the AHL. A line brawl broke out centering around him. No surprise there. I love Danny, always entertaining, but I don't think he's the solution to our back up problem. Manny Fernandez is still floating around.

LMAO first game back he gets into a fight. Ah the good ole cloutier.

Sadly enough it would be the most grit probably. And because of that I'd take him on that alone. Honestly, at this point what do we got to lose?

I really don't think Cloutier is a horrible choice. I still don't understand why they couldnt just keep going with Vally. I know he sucked but he is the best option they have. Their will be goalies on waivers as the season goes on though

I would just call up Johnson to play and have Zaba or Wikman backup

This would be awesome! How could you pass on this? Who else we got Zaba? please.

I have a soft spot for Cloutier anyway, I went to my one and only Rangers game in 99 and got his autograph and he talked me for a bit too. I was blown away that an NHL player would talk to a punk 13 yr old.

Cloutier should have been a F, he would have had a longer career as an enforcer.

Darren "Langoon" Langdon said he was by far the toughest guy on the team, both in the A (Binghamton) and NY.

He is certainly entertaining...remember watching that game live, still love watching the clip.
Salo had no idea what he was in for.

Dan would be a better back up then Zaba. If he is on he is a pretty good goalie and would come cheap

Haha, not this bunch of sissies. Luckily Cloutier would be able to take care of himself.

He should have been a forward.

Beachball Cloutier

The guy is simply not a huge upgrade over Vally, so I don't see the point on bringing him in, looking away from his antics.
