Thoughts on Leach

Don't feel like looking through the GDT, so I'm just wondering what other people thought of his game last night.

Personally, I didn't see anything wrong. He had good positioning, his passing was clean, he seemed to know exactly where his D partner was when making a chip play along the boards. Wouldn't mind seeing him stick around for a couple more games to see what he can do, if he can keep this up.

Wasn't the first goal partly his fault? I think I remember him failing to clear and then getting in a bad position leaving ribiero wide open in front.

Was that him? I think that was Joslin who tried to clear the puck, Ortmeyer missed the chip out and it went to the point. Everyone pretty much over compensated to the left side of the ice leaving Ribiero open by himself.

Joslin was on the left side and Leach on the right. Joslin was first on the puck behind the net and moved it up the boards on Leach's side. Leach was in position to defend and support the clear but Joslin didn't get back to his side and stayed next to Leach. The coverage mistake was Joslin's.

As to Leach's play, I was surprised that he is a pretty good skater and above average in puck protection. His short passing was accurate with good pacing. Watching on one PK, he seemed very comfortable with his partner who I think was Boyle. He is a little shy about shooting as one rush up the ice he had a shot and dropped it back then moved to a support position. But his game is stay at home. I didn't see anything glaring in his game and think he did have a positive impact.

The Blake Vlasic pairing is more problematic this second. Neither is skating with the puck and that's slowing transition and exits. On several plays, Vlasic stood in the defensive zone waiting for players to open but it allowed Dallas to set their defense. Until we start getting the puck off the sticks faster and skating out of the zone, its going to remain a tough stretch.

Leach is going to be a valuable rotation player, especially considering his cap hit.

I thought he was pretty solid. I didn't really notice him except for a few questionable passes that turned into turnovers. He's able to make the turn pretty well when players try and blow past him.

Sucked in the first (bad pokechecking/positioning)
Okay in the second (giveaways)
Good in the third (nice clears on the PK)

I thought he had one of the best plays of the game in the first when he jumped in on Ott who had just made a dirty hit on Boyle. Boyle was also getting in Ott's grill but Leach's quick willingness to hurt Ott's face spared Boyle a two minute roughing penalty allowing him to play the PP instead.

He played fine, he seems more solid than any other 7th dman the Sharks have iced over the last few years. Im really not worried about it until he gives me a reason to. He was definitely not the reason the Sharks lost that game.

Hes definitely willing to mix it up in the corners which is kind of what you need from a 7th dman. Someone that can suck up a few minutes and get in the other teams face a bit.

Considering we are paying him 1/6th of Huskins for essentially the same role, I say Leech is friggen awesome!

Are you evaluating Huskins on something other than his play for the Sharks this year?

I liked the edge Leach brought to his game. I think if he were just a little better skater there would be no question that he'd supplant Huskins in the starting 6; however, I believe Huskins has a bit more speed than Leach.

He's the best 200,000 dollar defenseman in the NHL, that's for damn sure.

That clueless look he perpetually has on his face doesn't help. Anybody else notice it?

EDIT: As much as we complain about Huskins, reading the article LS posted in another thread does shed a little bit of light on his struggles.

http://sharks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=510039

While the other two pairings have enjoyed previous experiences playing together, this is Huskins first year with the team AND he's stuck with a rotating partner (Demers, Joslin, callup of the day). I'm not saying he doesn't suck, but at least have some pity that he doesn't get to rely on chemistry like the others do...

Here's an interesting twist to this conversation. TSN reported that Chris Chelios had turned down an offer from and NHL team who wanted him as a limited role defenseman, but that he turned it down to be a top-4 defenseman in the AHL. Given the timing of that article, the fact that the Sharks were seeking defensive depth, and the fact that the Sharks have a history of brining in old-timers, what do you want to bet that it was the Sharks who pursued him?

Would you rather have Leach or Chelios? My vote goes to Leach at the moment.
