You mean like Rod Gilbert or Andy Bathgate? (They are the only ones I remember)

Link on the trade proposal board that Kovalchuk spent 4 hours negotiating and couldn't come to a agreement. I think that a trade with a promise of an extension would be our best bet of getting this guy. Im my estimation only Lundqvist, Gaborik, Callahan, DZ and Staal are untouchable for this guy.

I guess but I liken callahan to the heart and soul of this team, one guy who consistently goes out every game and plays his heart out. He might not have the talent but we need a guy like that on this team always.

I understand that.

But I also think hes the kind of player that can have his value inflated in a potential deal. That could work to the Rangers advantage.

yyy..no.

Why? Because he isn't signed past the end of this year and there is no guarantee that he would anyways.

A good third liner+fill+A good prospect+a high pick for a rental in a season where the chances of winning it all are about 1 in 100 is horrible management.

edit; And I dont think that you could get Atlanta to agree to give high picks if he doesnt re-up. Seems highly unlikely to me.

Very hopeful that Atlanta is as incompetent as Florida... believes they can re-sign Kovalchuk even after the deadline passes... and we can compete for him on July 1st. If they are competent and trade him we better be very involved and do our due diligence... players of the Kovalchuk-level don't become available often.

On the bright side... the "video" we send him on July 1st will be much better than the pathetic one we sent Gaborik... highlights of Lundqvist and Scott Gomez turning the puck over won't compare to clips of Gaborik and Lundqvist!

As far as giving up a 1st for Kovy, I only relinquish this years if he signs long term. Otherwise I think its gonna be a a couple of NHL servicable players and high prospects to get him.

Atlanta doesn't want prospects. They're going to want bonafide NHL'ers, young ones, that can step right in and help lessen the blow of Kovy leaving.

We're looking at something like Callahan, Girardi, Grachev and a 1st.

But of course Rozsival would have to be thrown in there somehow.

I think if/when he hits FA will be the best bet.

Your New York Rangers
OFFER
Sanguinetti, Dubinsky, Byers, McDonaugh + 1st,3rd if he resigns.

1st: Very High value
3rd:Medium value.
Sanguinetti:An offensive D-man ready for the NHL. Promising prospect. Medium-High value
Dubinsky: Plays hard game in and game out. Solid two way player that can do it all. HIGH value
Byers:Sub-par prospect destined for the 3rd-4th line. Could pan out to be better. Low-Medium value
McDonaugh:A very promising young D-man. Projected 1-2 dman. HIGH Value.

Now, before you say we are paying to much... think of this. We are talking about Kovalchuk here. We would instantly have two solid lines with Gaborik and Kovalchuk anchoring each one. Dubinsky leaving will be a blow. But... AA can step up to the 2nd and play with Kovalchuk (he should be able to make room for AA). We would have a bonafide top 6 for YEARS to come. By the time Drury comes off the books we have AA, Stepan sliding in. Our top 6 looks like this..

Cally?-AA-Gaborik
Kovalchuk-FA-Avery

With Lisin Boyle, Grachev, Stepan interchangable.

I would say we would have a higher end of mediocre offense. A good, solid Defense. An elite goalie. 2 game breakers. Grab a sub-par (2-4$m center) for the 2nd line and were golden. Ofcourse, this is all in a fantasy world and im 75% sure it would never work.

Kovalchuk $11 mil/yr.

Reports out of Montreal are that his agent and Atlanta can't come to terms. apparently he is asking for $11 million a season! I guess some of you can stop dreaming now. $11 mil a year....... even our General Manager wouldn't be that nuts, or would he?

He's not even one of the top 5 players in the league. Have fun in Russia, Ilya.

Damn. Kovalchuk is an 8, maybe 9 at most million dollar player. What he's asking for is ridiculous. I can see why though - Atlanta basically has to bend over for for him or their team will go down the drain

I don't understand any player asking for that much money when he has no championship ring to back up his talk. I know we threw money at Gomer, Dru, but these were proven winners at one point or another.....I just don't get where he gets the balls to ask for $11. And you guys know someone will bite.

If this is true, then I want no part of this guy. He seems to care more about money than character and winning. In a salary cap league, no player is worth $11 million a year.

Easy decision.

You need to get Staal or Del Zotto into any equation.
