Line Combos - One week from today

One week assuming Spezza and Michalek are back. What goes on with the lines?

I assume Fish and Alfie stay together.

I assume Spezza and Michalek come back on a line together.

Id like to see Kovy, Regin, Shannon stick completely.

Thoughts?

Yah i like your assesment here.
I would presume that the lines as they are now are workign really well, so why change it?

Foligno Fisher Alfredsson
Michalek Spezza Cheechoo
Shannon Regin Kovalev
Ruutu Kelly Neil

Philips Volchenkov
Kuba Karlsson
Carkner Picard/Campoli

Leclaire
Elliot

Leclaire will come back stronger than ever i feel, new goalie coach, after seeing elliot and brodeur, he needed to be tested and this is where it stands. Is it just me or could it be a psyhiological point too, do you see his goalie pads?? the look so skinny by the design which is easy for shooters, look at Fleury in pitsburgh for an example? change your pads leclaire??

Michalek - Spezza - Cheechoo
- Cheechoo has sniper abilities but has lost a step, IMO he is still faster than Heatley. The other lines are playing great right now so don't mess with the chemistry. Since two of them are just coming back from injury, I would start them as my 4th line & make them earn their minutes. They all certainly have the skill, let's see if they have the intestinal fortitude to work their way to being the top line instead of just having it handed to them.

Foligno - Fisher - Alfredson - playing great hockey together lately, they are all over the ice, Fisher is so hard to play against, he is so strong, hits hard & never seems to quit on a play. They are also your two leading scorers on the team so yes, keep them together. Foligno seems to fit well with these two, he's not scoring but he is contributing although not always on the scoresheet.

Shannon/Z. Smith - Regin - Kovalev
- I would also keep these three together unless we are playing bigger, tougher opponents then I would replace Shannon with Z. Smith who can handle it & step in to protect the other two. Smith can play C/LW & has shown enough to maybe keep him around for a while. There seems to be some nice chemistry with these three.

Ruutu - Kelly - Neil - a very expensive 4th line but playing great hockey, their puck pursuit, their board work, great hits, steals & attacking the net has been very good the last number of games. Keep them together & keep working hard.

Overall, a very hard working blue collar team right now that seems to be a playoff type team. They have been in a lot of 1 or 2 goal games all year & have been fighting for their playoff lives for a good part of the season. They are gelling right now & let's hope they are not peaking too soon. The Olympic break should help to heal some wounds & get them ready to push for a playoff spot. They have been a fun team to watch the last few games.

I agree with these lines. I've always felt that Clouston gave up too quickly on the Cheechoo-Spezza-Michalek line. They seemed to have a natural chemistry that resulted in good scoring opportunities. With the fact that Shannon and Regin have paired up nicely with Kovalev and Alfie and Fisher being solid together, the pressure is now off of them to be our primary scoring so that might open up Spezza-Cheechoo-Michalek to even more chances to score.

I posted this in the Spezza injury thread:

We've been talking about it on GMHockey.com for a while. Who sits when this team gets healthy? There seems to be a lot of chemistry this last little while.

It's a lot harder than it looks to balance the lineup.

Michalek - Spezza - Kovalev

Foligno - Fisher - Alfredsson

Shannon - Regin - Cheechoo
Ruutu - Kelly - Neil
Extras:
Donovan

Injured:
Winchester (will replace Cheechoo when ready)

Volchenkov - Phillips
Kuba - Karlsson
Campoli - Carkner

Extras:
Picard

Leclaire
Elliott

So we send down Z.Smith, M.Brodeur (there's nothing we can do with either guy).

I don't see where Cheechoo will fit on this team when Winchester comes back, I really don't.

Ruutu-Kelly-Neil is a very good 3rd line but would just be an absolute beast of a 4th. I'd feel bad taking away any of the 10-12 minutes of ES time they get a game.

If anything, Cheechoo should get another shot with Spezza and Michalek... he's hit 2 or 3 posts and scored a couple goals in his last 10 games. If he can keep it up we could have 4 very good ES lines.

His effort has been there the whole year, but he has a devil of a time skating. It's scary to see how slow he is and how often he's beaten to a play or beaten off the puck completely. I assume he could work with Spezza and Michalek, but who do you sit to let that happen? Winchester?

I dunno... i guess that is the problem... but I doubt it will be the guy making 3mil who winds up sitting. Could be Shannon or Winchester or whoever has a bad game.

Ugh, no. Neil has been tried on Spezza's wing many times and it's failed. Neil plays his best when he's playing with guys who play a similar style to him. I see no reason to break up the Ruutu-Kelly-Neil line.

Works for me
Edit: but then again, I think we'd be wasting out time with Cheechoo on the 2nd line. Kovalev needs more icetime to slowdown the play, and then with Michalek would speed it up on our side with nice passes by Spezza. So change Cheechoo and Kovalev, and i'll be happier

Donovan-Z.Smith-Winchester as 5th line

That's our best chance at success imo. But Clouston so far has a short history of messing with the lines and combos that were working well. Most seem to be in agreement with these lines, or at least very close. It will be interesting to see if Clouston is with us on this. I hope so, because i don't want to have to start doubting his decision making again. To me, making a line out of the guys who are out (mich, spezz) and adding cheechoo who was at his best there, should be a complete no-brainer.

Donovan, Cheechoo are healthys

Smith is playing way too well to be sent down. Cheechoo was terrible last night he cant keep up mentally or physically. I dont care which goalie is in just go with the hot hand.

Same lines I basically posted, I agree with giving Neil a chance with Spezza, Neil has played great lately

It will probably also depend on where Michalek gets inserted and how well he plays before Spezza gets back. Unfortunately Michalek coming back will force Clouston to juggle the lines around. He'll probably be replacing Foligno (i hope not, but...). Would he put Michalek on the third or fourth line? Maybe a Michalek-Smith-Cheechoo with Donovan coming out? Still need a center so Smith might be staying.

Before Spezza
Foligno-Fisher-Alfredsson
Shannon-Regin-Kovalev
Michalek-Smith-Cheechoo/Neil
Ruutu-Kelly-Neil/Cheechoo

After Spezza Returns
Foligno-Fisher-Alfredsson
Michalek-Spezza-Cheechoo
Shannon-Regin-Kovalev
Ruutu-Kelly-Neil

I don't think I've ever seen so much consensus on line combos.

Foligno-Fisher-Alfi
Michalek-Spezza-Cheechoo
Shannon-Regin-Kovy
Ruutu-Kelly-Neil

Philchenkov
Kuba-Karlsson
Picard-Campoli-Carkner

I think Clouston knows what line combos work and which ones don't. I was wondering why we had lines with such good chemistry and he decided to take them apart after a few games.

Maybe we're saving the good line combos for the playoffs so other teams aern't aware of them.

I wouldn't sit Shannon personally, not after they found out that he came back early from his concussion and wasn't effective (his fault).

So they question is: is Cheechoo more valuable playing 11 minutes a night, or is Winchester?

I like these lines as well.
Would this allow us to roll 4 lines with almost equal time?
(take away PP and SH time)
It would be great from a health point of view and for giving
Alfie and Kovie with more energy

The main thing I would do is keep a core of

Fisher-Alfredsson
Regin-Kovalev
Spezza-Michalek
Kelly-Ruutu

After that I would just interchange the other forwards, Neil, Cheechoo, Foligno, Shannon, based on performance

I like the consensus lines here but how about this if Cheechoo doesn't work out with Spezza:

9mm-Spezza-Kelly
Foligno-Fisher-God
Shannon-Regin-Kovalev
Ruutu-Smith-Neil

Extras: Donovan, Cheechoo, Winchester.... someone gets waived, I'd say Donovan. Or Winchester could take Smith's spot.

Kelly has been amazing lately and could help Spezza out by winning some battles and fishing pucks out of the corners. He's shown a lot more offensively this year too compared to Cheech.
