If you are Bob Gainey, How much are you ready to offer to Alex Kovalev for the next season ? ( It must be an offer comparable to the current market )

Whoa.

*Regains his senses*

When I saw the title, I automatically thought of Andrei Kastsytsin, and then scrolled fast, and saw propositions of contracts ranging from 5 to 5,5 millions/year, and told myself, "finally, it was bound to happen, they've received a collective punch to the head". And then I saw the name Kovalev.

Quite a relief, I'll admit.

Regarding the subject of the thread, I would wait to see how much he asks for, and if he really wants to come back (even though negociating just for the fun of it can be a great pasttime for some). It also depends if the Habs manage to reach round 2, or are eliminated tomorrow or on Monday. This said, I'd offer a lot of money. The departures of Quintal, Juneau, Traverse, Dykhuis, ..., will free up a lot of money that could be spent on Kovalev.

In the end, it doesn't matter much, since there will most likely not be any hockey next year.

Nice to see people posting from Russia.

Are we really going to go nuts and pay him big time for one good playoff serie? How about the many regular season games where he totally sucked?

you'd think he'd accept less just to play in a place where he could get a chance to win and that has fans that win.

How about those regular season games on which he was playing on his off wing and more often than not on the third line ?

IMPOSSIBLE for him to get those kinds of bonuses: Gainey is against player performance bonuses. He only gives out team performance bonuses. That and you're being too generous. Why should he get 0.1 M for making the All-Star game? How does him playing an extra meaningless game help us? He should only be rewarded for achieving things that help our team.

I say 5 million for 2 years. It's enough. If he is still getting greedy, maybe a "make the 3rd round of the playoffs bonus" but I really don't find that his current stats warrant more than 5.

a three year contract paying 4.5, 5, then 6 million.
I think Alex would like to stay here... not enough to turn down a lot more money somewhere else, but I think if we give him a good offer, he'll stay a Hab.

that sounds like a pretty fair deal. from my POV, i think we should only sign him for two years, but then again, if we don't want him during the third year, we could trade him for other assets.

but if that is the case, i'd rather we front load his contract. we have a lot of contracts coming off the books this year, so we could afford to pay him 6 mil for the first year, but if our prospects are knocking at the door, i want kovalev to be tradeable, meaning he's got to have a reasonable contract.

You know i never understood why they increase payroll as the years go up. I would go the other way around, 6 - 5 - 4.5!

This way, if production decreases year by year, then we wont complain as much because he gets payed less every year.

Am i being a smart *ss???

Now don't get me wrong... During the playoffs so far hes shown up... bar the incident in overtime.. though he made amends for that imo. BUT am i the only one who remember his play during the last run of games this year... NO HOLD ON.. before everyone starts to say this and that about who he played with and that he was playing with this guy and not playing with that guy.... If i'm the GM and i'm paying a guy 6 million.. he better show up everynight even if i ice him with my granny... HE was invisible!!!!! I wouldn't offer him that money again in a million years...

From what we know Kovalev likes being in Montreal, initially a great thing for the management to bring to the bargaining table... I think we as fans have been more turned on to him in the last few weeks... However in montreal we know how fickle folk can be.... i can recall certain threads about how AK was a waste of space etc, he didn't deserve the honor to wear the CH on his chest... Could you imagine if he signed a huge $6 mill contract and was invisible for the first few weeks of our next campaign - notice i wrote next campaign not next year!!! The media and fans would go KUNG ** on his *ss!!! It is such a tough predicament with AK to be in when it will come down to his contract... However i think with all that has gone on... a contract in the region of $3-$4 million would be fine... Obviously use a bonus scheme which would add an extra incentive... but i think Alexei also realises that there is something happen in this franchise at the moment and he may just want to stick around..... At the end of the day i think Gainey this year has taken steps with the releasing of high earning veterans and also contesting various taxes/leases the team has to pay for the bell centre in lowering the overall salary - that we are trying to stay clear of huge earners.. except say Franchise players Koivu and Teddy!!! So why would he sign another for such a high fee.....

I hope you all mamage to get this.. its a bit messed up but i hope you catch my drift..... I guess we'll just have to wait and see.....
