Oskars Bartulis
Can anyone give me a scouting report on this guy? What's his potential?
Thanks!

Well, after 4 games now, I think it's fairly official that Bartulis isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I think he'd have to have a pretty terrible game to be removed from the line-up at this point. You could argue that he's looked better and better each game. He botched a couple plays that caused a scare towards the end of tonight's game, but he wasn't the only one and the Kings were really flying. On the whole, he's definitely been solid, and my favorite thing about him and the best thing he's got going for him is the fact that he's a rookie who has played in 4 NHL games and yet he plays with the composure of a 10-year vet. He's a very cool customer out there.
But yeah, what a nice surprise this is...he's really got the makings to be a nice two-way defender.
I feel kinda bad for Syvret...he did play pretty well. It's just unfortunate for him that Bartulis has simply been better.

For some reason, Bart looks so big on the ice. He isnt listed as being that big but on the ice I cant help but notice his height. Anyway I do agree.

Bartulis is impressing everyone. He was kind of off my radar as well.
He manages the puck calmly for a rookie, makes good decisions, skates well, and moves the puck well.
There's not much more you could ask from a young guy like him. He's certainly earned his position ahead of Syvret.

Better than Jones, not as good as Pronger.

I'm liking him a lot. I initially thought he was a career AHL who could be called up. But the more I see him the more I like him. I don't think he'll ever be a top 4 defenseman at the NHL level but he looks good on the 3rd pairing.

You should write scouting reports for a living.

I've been impressed so far, let's hope he keeps it up. Whatever it takes to keep OKT as the 7th and Wolfy on the sidelines is fine by me.

He is playing very well. His composure with the puck really impresses me. And yes he is listed at 6'2" but he does look larger than that. I like him much more then Dan or OT.

He's been great. I do feel bad for Syvret, who was finally getting a shot at playing for an NHL team. Oh well, defensive depth is never a bad thing.

Bart's been superb!
I don't at all feel bad for Syvret, I'm still not convinced he's an NHL defenseman...but maybe that's just me.

From what I've read, he's also playing himself onto the Latvian team for the Olympics.

agreed.
And OB's composure with the puck has been much better than I expected. He really seems confident out there.

He must have a build like parent, I've seen both listed as low as 180ish lbs and as high as 200+

He's definitely bigger than I expected, I was under the impression that he had been pretty small, but he's average-sized, hasn't really made any glaring mistakes so far which is all you can really ask.

I think he would have been there anyways.
OKT was a healthy scratch last night, so the team feels that Bartulis may be the 6th defenseman right now.

Which means they should do something with Syvret/OKT.

So far, so good. But the real test will be when the adrenalin wears off - the NHL season is a long one and grinds the mind more than the body.
He looks pretty good to me at this point. Don't know that he and Parent will be a true Cup calibre third pairing in April, but so far so good.
