This chant shows why the Rangers fans are some of the best in any sport. 30 years and still going strong. That hit might have ruined our season and many current fans that are regulars at games were probably not even born but POTVIN SUCKS! is here to stay.

As much as it's stale now and I don't even yell it anymore, it wouldn't be a Rangers game without "Potvin Sucks!"

its a dumb tradition to be honest... maybe "Potvin is an *******" would be better. He definitely did not suck.

Took three posts to get an Islander fan's perspective. That's shocking.

Maybe we should hear "your take" on it. Oh yeah, there's a place for that, the Islanders board.

Here's a take:

Great chant, great shelf-life. I used to chuckle at it when I had NYR season tickets.

...And a great hit.

Only the same limp-wristed fruitloop mentality that compels naive "Dirrrrrty Hit!" threads on the mainboard every hour would consider Potvin's destruction of Nilsson to be same.

Clean, nasty hit by a mean player, problem was that the 1/2 of the late-70s version of "NYR's latest saviors" was a brittle man of glass.

Think that's an NYI fan bias? Think again. Watch the Legends of Hockey video on Potvin on Youtube. In the second minute, a clip of the Nilsson hit is shown, while a former player is talking about how Potvin, was mean and sometimes dirty, "....and that is what made him great."

The player speaking? John Davidson.

and rangers fans chanting this 20+ years after he is retired just proves many things about Rangers fans who chant it.

I love watching clips of Potvin play. The guy could play very dirty at times, but that hit was as clean as possible.

Same way in which I enjoyed watching Stevens play (though I think he went for the head a bit too much, but that's JMO).

Speaking of old time like hits, Trotts, how about that Ohlund hit on Zetterberg? Holy smokes, what a hit. Ohlund's chest/arms planted right into Z's shoulder. Beautiful open ice hit.

I don't think anyone thinks he actually sucked. He's quite a ****** now as a commentator, but the man was a dominating, incredible d-man.

Although it's funny that the chant really bothers him.

I haven't really chanted "Potvin Sucks" in a few years now but if I still did, my only relevant purpose for it would be because it still get's such a rise out of Islander fans. No matter how outdated and irrelevant the chant is now it probably will never go anywhere for the simple reason that it irritates the hell out of Islander fans 30 years later.

Seriously. The simple fact that this guy comes in here acting all irritated is great. It shows the chant still works to this day.

I never chanted it, and most likely never will. Way too young to say that I've seen Potvin play, but from clips I've saw, he was an incredible player. He doesn't suck as a individual or a player, and the hit was clean. When the chant was started, it was purely out of anger due to the hit.

Just like the victory song, and the rangers sweater (etc.) it has became a tradition and has been passed down to another generation. I can really careless about the chant, but I honestly would miss it if it was gone.

But, I agree with Jonathan here. Seeing the chant piss off Potvin to this day is so great to see.

The sidenote on the infamous Potvin/Nilsson hit is that it occured during the '79 season. It just amped up the intensity in an already obscenely intense rivalry.

So when NYR upset NYI that spring, it was very hard being a young Isles fan at the time, trust me. (Happy HF didn't exist at the time. )

About 10 years ago, my daughter (then about 15) was doing the "Potvin Sucks" cheer when some guy sitting behind her said "you probably don't even know who Potvin is" to her. He of course said it loud enough so that anyone within 15 feet heard him. She turned around, shot him a look and then told him (in great detail) the Ulf Nielsen story. She also went on to tell the guy that Potvin was also a wife beater. The other fans around cheered and the guy was so embarassed he just about climbed under his seat.

I was never so proud in my life.

I don't think anyone really thinks that Potvin sucks... it's just tradition now. Although we could try to be as classy as those Devil fans who have changed it to "Rangers suck". Not sure if this happens in the Mausoleum or not... I try to avoid Long Island all together...

I was told the story when I was young by my father and have since passed it on to my gf as she got into the Rangers. Potvin sucks!

Kudos to your girl and you should be proud!

Potvin..yes a clean hit, but he was noted for takin out players legs. His hip checks to the knees were disgusting. He was good but lots of his hits were dirty to me. He just had to smash Ulfie cause he was small and a great threat paired with Hedberg

Yes Rangers fans hate him, but not cause he was good. We had a great shot for the cup that year, and that hit along with Davidson playing injured in the finals ruined it.

Like any dynasty, bandwagon fans come out in full force and this I feel fueled the rivalry more...which is a good thing, but hurts

I must admit the chant today bothers me because they start whistling when we are on a rush, taking out the noise of cheering for the team . Gets annoying sometimes with the timing of it.

I should also note that the true Islander fans that remain today are some of the nicest fans on these boards. If they keep that up it will be hard to keep the rivalry going

Potvin didn't suck as a player, but he sucks as a human being. Kinda like Marty, another no morals classless moron that is a great hockey player. To sum it up, Potvin DOES suck, and so does Fatso.

LGR!!!!

What most Islander fans should understand is that there was a lot of pent up frustration that eminated from the dynasty years, when they rubbed the "1940!" chant in our faces.
