Kovalchuk traded to NJ

As reported on yahoo.

http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;...=cbc&type=lgns

Probably false.
Nucks have no cap room and cannot fit him under the rooster.
Plus, it would cost alot in terms of prospects.

Nevertheless, thought it was interesting.

Have to find a pretty big chicken to fit him under the rooster.

Pierre LeBrun said that Gillis flat out denied it. Also what could we give up that wouldn't set us back significantly?

And we also are tight to the cap next year with Kesler, Raymond and Mitchell all FA's. We have 4 million from Demitra, 1.2 mill from Wellwood, 1.1 from Johnson and 1.4 from Luongo all coming off the books (some more but these are the main ones). If the cap goes up 1 million as expected we have about 7.7 million. Unless Hodgson's back continues bothering him his 1.7 will take some space, maybe Schroeder who will be close. Kesler will at MINIMUM be 3.5. Kovalchuk would probably be in the 7 mill range. Just don't see it happening without needing to rip apart a good chunk of this team

Two Sedins for a Kovalchuk?

It is not as if the Sedins will ever become first line players, eh?

Just for fun, what kind of package would you need to put together?

Burrows, Edler, Schneider and a 1st for Kovalchuk +?

Well, look at what rentals have cost in the past. I think the Hossa trade is most similar, where it was like, Hossa and Dupuis for Angelo Esposito, Erik Christensen and Colby Armstrong and a pick....it would probably cost us a prospect, a pick, two roster players...

It's not like anyone is going to trade a key part of their franchise for a UFA, especially with no guarantee to sign him.

Nothing! There is nothing we could give and no chance of fitting him under the cap. For better or worse, our core is set for the next 6 years - plain and simple.

We'll be lucky to retain Kesler.

There's been a lot of buzz about this. I'm told it was mentioned on this past HNIC. I would toss Atlanta anyone but Kesler for Kovalchuk. This offense instantly becomes elite if we get Kovalchuk.

Yeah true, but we're just finally starting to have some hope with our prospects and getting Kovalchuk would just suck in terms of prospect depth. Kovalchuk is my favourite player in the league and I'm saying this. And as I added to post, there's basically no chance of re-signing Kovalchuk without at least losing more players (after the trade) just to fit him under the cap.

Yeah, I know anything can happen, but this is probably the last thing I could see ever happening this year, the Canucks will not get Kovalchuk.

Now, no one quote me on that should it come to pass. To distract you from that, I present to you sexy Kovalchuk.

I'll take an offense with Kovalchuk for a serious Stanley Cup run. You could re-sign him to deal similar to Gaborik's deal by getting rid of Demitra and Bieksa.

Could you imagine a powerplay with the Sedins and Kovalchuk? It would be unstoppable. And Gillis has proven to be a very good contract negotiator.

We're already 5th in the league in goals scored per game...I'd love Kovalchuk but I'm far more concerned about the state of our defense and our PK, especially after what we'd have to give up to get him.

Sure, if you can keep both Sedins and Kovalchuk, it might be. But you can't, so it's moot.

No I cannot imagine it.

Kovalchuk is reported asking for a maximum contract of $11.3 million over 10 years.
http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-bl...f_schultz_blog

With cap hits of the Sedins at $6.1 million each and Luongo at $5.333 million that throws the whole cap out of whack.

No way that happens.

I suggest a four-way trade.

Canucks get Kovalchuk, Gaborik, Cammalleri
Atlanta get Daniel Sedin, Halak
Rangers get Henrik Sedin, Corey Schneider
Montreal get O'Brien, Evander Kane, and my esteems for somehow getting roped into the stupidest trade I could half-seriously conceive in the spirit of this thread.

You know there's someone out there who's already mapped it all out.

It's not going to happen. Gillis vehemently denied the rumour a couple weeks ago, and capwise it just wouldn't make sense:

(2010, assuming Schroeder, Raymond, Bernier, a slew of draft picks and Bieksa are dealt)

Sedin (6.1) - Sedin (6.1) - Burrows (2)
Kovalchuk (10) - Kesler (4) - Grabner (0.765)
Samuelsson (2.5) - Hodgson (0.855) - Hansen (0.55)
Glass (0.55) - Bolduc (0.55) - Rypien (0.55)

Offense: $34.52M

Ehrhoff (3.1) - Mitchell (3)*
Salo (3.5) - Edler (3.25)
FAD Hamhuis* (3.75)* - O'Brien? (2)*
Rome (0.6)*

Defense: $19.2M

Luongo (5.33)
Backkup (0.55)

Team: $59.6M

There's really no room, unless we don't go out for a defenseman in the off-season and rely on two bottom pairing defensemen, along with Salo in our top 4 which is never a sure thing.

Ahhh, that Salo contract continues to bite us in the ass.

Kovalchuk sucks.

Did anyone watch him during the canucks/thrashers game? 2 direct giveaways to goals, no backcheck, no hussle.

The guy is a dud.

Whoever acquires him will not go far.

Well, I don't want to sidetrack the thread, but I think Kesler would be foolish to sign for less than $5mil. per year.

Besides, as already been said, we need some top rate help on defense and possibly some depth at center.

What team isn't interested in Kovalchuk? And with Waddell as GM of the Thrashers who knows what could happen- however I think this is mostly conjecture and isn't grounded in real fact. While it'd be awesome to get Kovy we'd have to shed in excess of $10 mil in salary (and more if we wanna resign Kesler, assuming he doesn't end up going the other way).

Unless we can negotiate with Kovalchuk and workout a contract extension in the range of $7-7.5M then he's not worth both the cost of the assets it'd take to acquire him, or the cap space it'd take to re-sign him.
