Ilya Kovalchuk Proposals

First off let me start by saying that Kovalchuk is my favorite player ever and i do not want to see him leave. But things look worse than ever. No way in hell are we paying him 10mil or more. I am a fan first, fan of players on the team second. A brutal contract like that would destroy the Thrashers and the Thrashers are what i care about the most, not 1 player. I want Ilya re-signed first and foremost. But not at 11mil per.
------------------------------
These are potential start offs, i'm sure more will have to go.

To Montreal- Kovalchuk

To Atlanta- Pacioretty, Lapierre
---

To Colorado- Kovalchuk

To Atlanta- Wolski, Svatos

Here are 2 proposals i figure i throw out there. These 2 proposals are just proposals thrown out there i didn't sit here and take time to think of a trade... what do you think about them though?

I'm sure you could get a heck of a lot more for Ilya.

Especially the Colorado one. Add a first and a prospect to that one and it works.

From an Avs fan, I would add either Liles or a pick onto that.

Hickey, a late 1st rounder and late 2nd rounder, plus UFA Frolov....quantity over quality.

Schenn and Frolov I would do.

Value for Kovalchuk will depend on whether you can re-sign him to a long term deal or whether he will become a rental and head to the KHL as a UFA to play next season. If he can be re-signed, then a lot of NHL level talent will be coming back to Atlanta. If he's a rental, then mostly prospects and picks.

I'm not sure where about the OP's source for the $10M per year contract idea, but I can't see any team paying Kovalchuk that kind of money, even on one of the CBA long term loophole deals.

The Thrashers would have to waive players better than those in the proposal just to make the deal.

The Thrashers do not need a quantity for quality deal right now, and NHL defenseman or defensive prospects are not a priority. Grachev would probably be required, along with a Top 6 F like Higgins or Dubi.

Recent deadline trades for superstars:

-Marian Hossa to PITT for Colby Armstrong (25), Erik Christensen (24), Angelo Esposito (19), 1st '08

-Peter Forsberg to NAS for Scottie Upshall (23), Ryan Parent (19), 1st '07, 3rd '07

The return for Kovy should be even higher than the one for Hossa, but the template is as such: at least one roster player younger than 26, an A- prospect and a 1st.

From an Edmonton perspective, I'd offer Dustin Penner, Tom Gilbert/Denis Grebeshkov, JF Jacques, Riley Nash and a 2010 1st for Kovy and Reasoner.

Penner-Antropov-Little
Kozlov-Peverley-Afinogenov
Kane-White-Armstrong
Jacques-Slater-Thorburn

Hainsey-Bogosian
Enstrom-Kubina
Gilbert-Salmela

Kovalchuk-Horcoff-Gagner
Nilsson-O'Sullivan-Brule
Potulny-Cogliano-Stone
Moreau-Reasoner-Stortini

Visnovsky-Smid
Souray-Gilbert
Staios-Chorney

JDD
Dubnyk

I think it's pretty clear that the proposal I put up isn't about quantity. Clearly some of those players are there to balance out the cap. They can be waived themselves.

A fairly high first, Dubinsky, Higgins and Sanguinetti is not a bad haul. If you think you're going to get some crazy package for him, I say think again. If he's leaving, why would he sign extension at the deadline? If he goes, he's going all the way to free agency, which means the package they get isn't going to be that great. I would consider adding a second or another mid-level prospect, but I have a feeling I'm in the right ballpark. Whether or not they'd be willing to take on Rozsival is a good question, but I think if the haul they were offered was good enough, they would.

Getting stuck with a $5/mil a year bottom pairing defenseman with two more years on his abysmal contract is not going to be acceptable to a team that has an internal cap number.

Making the cap work will be a big problem in any potential Kovalchuk-Rangers trade...I mean at least with a guy like Briere there is some value....but those contracts for Rozi, Drury, and Redden cannot be swallowed as a salary dump. They are barely worthy of being on an NHL roster right now the way they are playing.

Again, if the return is good enough, they'd find a way to make it work. If the Rangers have the best offer on the table, but it includes the caveat of taking Rozsival, I think they'd agree to it. Besides, they could do the same thing the Caps are doing with Nylander. Loan him to the Russian league. Or the Rangers could send him off somewhere else first.

And the real dollar value of his contract on those two years isn't quite as bad as the caphit.

If he becomes available, I think Sather will put on the full court press. He won't be able to resist.

Good point, $3.5 million/year over two years is not that bad at all.

Still want Grachev though.

That's IF we can get him to resign with us. I'm sure the Thrashers would want Frolov resigned too. At least I would think so. Good deal though.

Re-signing of both players=foregone conclusion

Or the deal doesn't get done.

The offer from Montreal is less than pitiful. You can get that kind of quality in one year of drafting. For that you give away....Kovalchuk?

An unsigned Kovy can get either:

1) 2 roster players, at least one of them on the 2nd line/top-4 D or better both younger than 27

2) A combo of 3 grade-A prospects and first rounders

Bouwmeester's RIGHTS was worth a roster player and a pick. Imagine what kind of return Kovy is gonna fetch.

Bouwmeester's rights came with the understanding that there was a pretty damn good chance they were going to sign him, which they did. If Kovalchuk is unsigned, then it's a different story.
