Why?

We need a top notch defensive d-man more than anything else. Second on the list is a strong defensive center.

Vanek would be nice but there are other priorities.
This team bleeds goals and thats the biggest reason why they are a .500 team.

I would LOVE to have Vanek on the team. Problem with Mr. Bugg's proposal though is I wouldn't do it for Penner (robbing Peter to pay Paul), and I don't think the Sabres would even think of trading the guy.

Buffalo is looking for complimentary players to improve a solid core, not trading away major pieces.

I would agree with this. I think subtracting some black holes on this team might even do as much as any additions would. Trade Gilbert and O'Sullivan for guys who know how to take care of their own end (1C 1D) and I bet you see a MAJOR improvement in this team.

I think of Vanek as a Gomez/Horcoff type player--a useful contributor overpaid by about 1.5-2M.

Having said that, I don't think Sabres are looking to trade him any time soon. It would take Penner + for them to start thinking, at which point the Oilers should walk away.

Wow. Equating Horcoff with Vanek. That's a gas.

Do Vanek and Gomez have different coloured eyes too?

wow .. wow... overreaction.. There was no "equating" .. the poster just said that Vanek is overpaid by ~1.5M\yr.. just like Horcoff and Gomez

I would pass on Vanek... I know Hemsky needs a shooter so we could get 2 scoring lines going but a 7M player should not be it..

Vaneks contract aside...the Oiler are a grand total of 6 goals behind Vancouver (the 3rd highest scoring team in the conference) and Vancouver has played one more game.
With regards to goals against there are only 2 teams in the conference lower than the Oilers...Columbus and Anaheim. If the Oilers give up more than 2 goals against the Caps then they will be 2nd last in the Conference in GA.
Its pretty clear that goal scoring isn't this teams issue at all.
Vanek doesn't solve anything.

Another soft forward with a lot of skill. Where have I heard this before? And let's give them our best powerforward for him? I don't think so. Vanek is not a player I want to build this franchise around.
And as far as the comparison between Vanek's contract to Horcoff's and Gomez's, I'd have to agree. He wasn't saying anything about the player.

I think Vanek would look great in Edmonton. He has some size (6'2", 207lbs), and has put up 43, 36 and 40 goals the last 3 seasons. When was the last time we had a 40 goal scorer in Edmonton? I'm not saying he's the best option, but I wouldn't mind seeing him with Hemsky. He does have and Alberta connection too (Red Deer/ Lacombe area) which doesn't hurt.

Petr Klima last 40 goal scorer.

Penner is on pace for a 35-40 goal season. Trading him for Vanek is the most ludicrous thing I've heard in a long time.

DEFENSE NEEDED!

The sensible people on this board know that we need defensive help more than anything. We need another Smid.
