Especially since this draft is considerably weaker especially in the defenseman dept., I would be very willing to dangle our first round pick. With our draft success and farm system we can take more project picks anyway. I trust Conte enough to pick solid players while not having a first round pick.

Is it?

Remember Rob Niedermayer's last season with the Ducks? And how is he playing with us again?

Right.

I guess, judging by the +/- numbers, Selanne is junk now too, eh? Here's a helpful hint. If your team's leader in plus/minus is a rookie by the name of Sexton with a mere +3, I don't think there is a whole lot of stock in plus/minus.

Scotty N is not going to command a #1 draft pick, a solid prospect, and a solid NHL roster player. Not at his age, and not with his baggage. My guess is he comes with a 2nd round pick and a player.
Some aging stars and lessor defensemen:

Leetch was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs just prior to the trade deadline for prospects Maxim Kondratiev, Jarkko Immonen, a first-round pick in the 2004 draft

The Nashville Predators acquired D Brendan Witt from the Washington Capitals for F Kris Beech and a 1st round pick in 2006 (G Simeon Varlamov).

The Vancouver Canucks acuired D Keith Carney and D Juha Alen from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for Brett Skinner and a 2nd round pick in 2006 (F Bryce Swan).

The Calgary Flames acquire Jordan Leopold from the Colorado Avalanche for Lawrence Nycholat, Ryan Wilson, and a 2009 2nd round draft pick.

The New York Rangers acquire Derek Morris from the Phoenix Coyotes for Dmitri Kalinin, Nigel Dawes, and Petr Prucha.

The New York Islanders acquired F Ryan Smyth from the Edmonton Oilers for F Robert Nilsson, F Ryan O'Marra and a 1st round pick in 2007 (D Alex Plante).

The San Jose Sharks acquired Bill Guerin from the St. Louis Blues for F Ville Nieminen, F Jay Barriball, and a 1st round pick in 2007 (F David Perron).

The St. Louis Blues traded 35 year old Doug Weight to the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes received Weight and Finnish forward Erkki Rajamaki for forwards Jesse Boulerice, Mike Zigomanis and the rights to unsigned draft pick Magnus Kahnberg.

The Blues also got first- and fourth-round draft picks in 2006 and another fourth-rounder in 2007.

Tired of looking....There are to many just in the last 5 season.

First round pick and Matt Corrente.

Who wouldn't make that trade for Niedermayer?

I wouldn't. Corrente is clearly going to be a solid defenceman in the NHL for years to come. I'm also not convinced that Niedermayer will put us over the top for the Cup.

Not going to go through them all, but most of those are not good or comparable examples (for instance the Rangers/Morris one was simply a salary cap dump). Of them, I'd say the Leetch one is the best example you gave.

Anaheim is not trading us Ryan. If they want to rebuild, they'll get rid of their veterans and keep their young players. Don't be ridiculous.

i agree, i just think thats the only way we should trade for Neids, cause we need a good center just as much it think
......and our prospects are really hard to let go at this point as well as they are playing.
If at all with neone, do we trade now or at deadline?

What do we need a center for? And Ryan's a wing anyway.

....my bad thought he was a center. either way I just think neids is only worth it if there is a little more coming our way. If were gonna give anything good up, it should be for the future.

And there no reason to believe Scotty wouldn't sign at least a one year contract with us, especially when we now have his brother on the team and there is no reason to believe - again - he won't be around next year.

As long as we don't give away too much this is really a no-brainer.

Because Lemaire inexplicably still thinks that Elias should be moved back to wing when Zubrus returns. If we keep Elias at centre, we don't need to trade for one. But if Lemaire is adamant about putting Elias at wing, then a guy like Koivu would be a good rental.

Rolston-Koivu-Elias
Parise-Zajac-Langenbrunner
Bergfors-Zubrus-Clarkson
Pandolfo-R. Niedermayer-McAmmond

Extra: Pelley, Pikkarainen, Zharkov

Martin-S. Niedermayer
Salvador-Oduya
White-Greene

Extra: Mottau, Fraser

Brodeur
Danis

Of course, I'm sure at least one roster player would have to be going back to the Ducks in order to trade for both Koivu and Niedermayer, but that's still a deadly lineup.

I'd love to get our hands on a face-off man, but even if we do I don't know where he'd go in the lineup.

Something else for Lou and Lemaire to figure out I guess. Honestly, I'm comfortable with the centres we have. Once Zubrus returns, we're actually pretty strong down the middle with Zajac, Elias, Zubrus, and Niedermayer, with the flexibility to have McAmmond or Pelley play centre as well if needed.

Another defenceman who is apparently available is JM Liles from Colorado. Supposedly he gave the Avs a list of teams he'd be willing to waive his NTC to be traded to. His salary isn't ridiculous either, so I'm curious if the Devils are on his list of teams, and if Lou is inquiring into this.

Has anyone actually watched him this year? Not impressed at all...

All depends on the payment because he's not worth a good prospect or a first rounder.

of course you bring him if he is available at a reasonable cost. even if it means getting rid of a draft pick and prospect

if the team is dominating in feb march and they think they are close, you bring in people like neidermayer who are proven winners and don't have any doubts why he has 4 rings, he is a huge factor, although I have not seen him play much so i am going on what he used to be

but he is the type of player you take a risk on for a cup, and it usually means giving up a good prospect (corrente, eckford etc) somebody like that

i would think the devils have an edge on getting him
