and the drafting they've done in the later round has been poor, Enstrom being the only stand out.
they also have a small fan base and are unable to spend to the cap. If the Oilers could have a 21 year old Heatley, a 19 year old Kovalchuk, and an owner like Katz, that would be a great start. The problem was that the Thrashers didn't have the money to keep their stars and surround them with talent, the Oilers do. I like how you listed 2 of the top 5 goal scorers in the NHL like it was a bad thing. Yes, Stefan was a bust, and taking a goalie that high is ALWAYS a dumb move, that's on them. Think about Kovalchuk, Heatley, and one of either Nash or Boumeester. That's what it should have been. Goalies are a crap shoot and take way longer to develop, that's why they aren't usually taken in the top 10, let alone top 5 or top 2.

I wasn't listing Kovalchuk and Heatley as a bad thing just to show the contrast between what you can get. I think this idea of tanking for high picks=win is flawed logic. You need to surround the stars you hopefully draft with solid roleplayers in the later rounds. Thrashers have only drafted one player (Enstrom) in the later round who's actually a top4/top 6 forward all the rest of the guys they drafted were busts or bottom 6/bottomg pairing/back up goalies.

More like a 3rd. Cogs has really lowered his value this year. He's got similar value to Sergei Kostitsyn IMO.

Well luckily you're wrong. I wouldn't trade him for a 2nd, because I think hes a great 2nd-3rd line type of guy, but his league value probably is a second.

Saying hes worth a third shows little to no hockey sense.

You could be right. Either way he has similar value to Sergei Kostitsyn so i guess Sergei is worth a second now!

Why does anyone want to trade Penner? His contract is a bargain if he can be a 70-80 point player.

Visnovsky or Souray should be available. Something proven would have to be coming back. I bet Phoenix and Colorado in the West and Atlanta, Florida and Buffalo in the East would be interested.

Something with Phoenix involving Souray and Mueller as centerpieces?

Frolov is no better than Penner at this point, and I'm not sure picking Stoll back up is moving in the right direction.

From Boston...

Matt HUNWICK (1.4), Blake WHEELER (2.8 w/bonus) and Tampa's second rounder in 2010 for Andrew COGLIANO (1.1) and Denis GREBESHKOV (3.1).

That coupled with the very fair and right on Jersey offer for Visnovsky would equal

Penner - Brule - Hemsky
MPS - Gagner - Wheeler
Eberle - Horcoff - Bergfors
Stone - Stortini - Nilsson
EX: Jacques/Moreau/Omark/O'Sullivan

Souray - Oduya
Smid - Gilbert
Staios - Hunwick
EX: Strudwick

Next year
That team has fixed its size issues alot, and has an option of strengthening the defensive core with the extra forwards.

I like the foundation of this deal. I do think the Oilers would prefer Patrice Cormier over both Burlon and Vasyunov.

Counter Proposal

Lubomir Visnovsky
Riley Nash

For

Johnny Oduya
Matt Corrente
Patrice Cormier
1st RD 2010

I think Oiler fans would lynch me for this considering Lubo is really at the top of his game rightt now. Overall though, I love Matt Corrente's upside considering his ability to skate and willingness to play physical. Cormier is the type of gritty player the Oilers lack in their system.

No. Cormier isn't available if we're also tossing away our first and our best defense prospect. He's got Bobby Holik written all over him and we could really use another Bobby Holik.

Would Brule be part of the rebuild or the firesale? If the latter, Connolly + 2nd round pick for Brule and salary that comes off the books at the end of this year?

Brule sticks around for the rebuild. And if Brule was going to be traded, why would the Oilers take salary on? Keeping a salary coming off the books is more valuable to a rebuilding team than trading it for longer one.
