Bad News: Kulikov out with "significant" injury

From the Sun-Sentinel:

Florida Panthers: Kulikov out with "significant'' knee injury (update 5:50 p.m.)
> Posted by Steve Gorten on December 18, 2009 09:05 PM

Harvey Fialkov picking up Panthers for Steve G. here in chilly Raleigh. Place panics when snow is forecast kind of like South Florida does when a hurricane is brewing. Turned out to be cold rain. Couldn't even get a local paper because of fear!

Anyhow, as Steve reported rookie defenseman Dmitry Kulikov, who was hurt early in the second period Friday against the Hurricanes when he suffered a lower body injury, didn't travel with the team.

Just finished a pre-game chat with coach Pete DeBoer and while he said the knee injury appears to be, "significant,'' he doesn't expect surgery to be required. That sounds like the MCL.

It's been a tough past two games for Kulikov. Wednesday against the Thrashers, he was struck in the neck by a hard shot. He also suffered a cut on his right ankle from an opponent's skate.

Defenseman Bryan Allen, who sat out Friday's game to rest his surgically-repaired knee is a, "game-time decision,'' however, DeBoer said he'll play.

The team tried to call up young defenseman Keaton Ellerby from Rochester, who would've made his NHL debut, but bad weather on the East coast prevented him from getting out. Ellerby may join the team in Philadelphia.

Kulikov's injury is the first suffered by a Panthers' defenseman this season, pretty remarkable considering we're nearly midway through the season.

Center Kamil Kreps, who sat out Friday with lower-body injuries after slamming into the Panthers' bench door Wednesday, will not play tonight but is with the team so DeBoer suspects he'll be good to go against the Flyers.

Pretty sucky, no?

I've seen Mr. Garrison and am not finding myself comfortable when the puck is anywhere near him (this said, after only two games, to be fair).

But I don't know anything about Mr. Ellerby. Can someone here help me out?

If he's better, why wouldn't he be called up before Mr. Garrison?

Like I said before, I think the fact that Garrison had previous NHL experience went in his favor. Ellerby was called up Saturday to replace Garrison but got stuck in weather. I have to think Ellerby's going to be Kulikov's replacement. He's a better defenseman than Garrison, despite Garrison having a few more points in Rochester. Ellerby plays on the shutdown pairing with Clay Wilson and gets #1 PK time. Anyone who watches Amerks games can see that he's their best D. He's a great skater and he's tall(6'4"). He makes a good first pass and is capable of rushing the puck.

Sorry you said Mr Garrison and that was all I could think of when you did.

Anyway, I'm all for Ellerby making his NHL debut.

It sucks if he's out long cause he was gaining experience and doing a great job while gaining it!

Is he physical? Can he skate?

Yeah, I was gonna suggest we get some use of him before he has a sex change and isn't eligible to play in the NHL anymore.

Sidney Crosby manages quite well. I think Mr. Garrison could also.

He can skate for sure, not too physical though. This will come in time. He has improved sooooo much since last year.

I think Jordon Henry will be ready soon too. He is a good skater and is more physical than Ellerby.

has henry improved this year as well? i wrote about him last year after seeing him in person against providence. the short of it was that i was very impressed. his agility, in particular, was great for a big guy. good skater in general though and seemed pretty steady and confident out there.

Henry has def improved. He throws his weight around, he can skate, and he is starting to score a little bit too. He has 3 goals and is +9.

He is turning into my favorite defensemen, Garrison has has been my favorite the last two years.

I'll nicely disagree about Henry improving. He rarely throws the big hits that he did last seaso. Just like all the other defenseman he gets out skated often and is out of position a lot.

I'm not too excited about Henry either. At best he'd become a 6th or 7th d-man in the NHL. Good AHL defenseman though.

I don't know what game you are watching, but Henry has regressed this season, as has Micahel Caruso. Two solid, dependable defensemen last season who have turned into complete liabilities this season. Don't know what the deal is.

Caruso's never going to become anything until he improves his quickness and agility. He's strong but he's like a lumbering ox.

I didn't know that Walker went into Kuli's knee like he did on the boards, I didn't see the first couple periods of that game. Kinda crappy by Walker, imo.
