Greyhounds' Muzzin Inks Free Agent Deal With Kings

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=303092

Remember the late-blooming unrestricted free-agent defenceman from the Soo Greyhounds we told you about a couple of weeks ago.

Well, OHL overager Jacob Muzzin is a free agent no more.

Sources tell TSN Muzzin has agreed to terms on a three-year entry level contract with the Los Angeles Kings.

The deal will not be signed or formalized until after Jan. 1 in order for Muzzin to take advantage of favorable terms in the CBA regarding future arbitration rights, but interested teams calling Muzzin are now being told he has made his decision and it's the Kings.

Muzzin was a first round OHL draft pick who missed his entire first year of junior because of back surgery. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2007 but was not signed by them or subsequently drafted by anyoe else, so he became an unrestricted free agent last summer.

The Woodstock, Ont., native currently leads all OHL defencemen in scoring with 41 points (9 G, 32 A) in his 34 games this season.

Love 'em. I felt like the Penguins made a huge mistake not signing him this offseason.

If you check out the blog, I've got a lot of past stuff about him.

In a nutshell, you're looking at a big, physical defenseman who is solid defensively and who can also move the puck up ice and run the point on the powerplay. His skating could use a bit of work, but there's room for improvement.

Sounds good, let's hope he is able to morph himself into something formidable in the NHL.

If it's legit than it sounds like our already rich D pool has gotten a little richer.

How does he project and who does he compare to? Is he AHL depth or a legit NHL prospect?

Pretty sure he can go straight to Manchester.

How does this put us with the 50 contracts limit?

Hey, I'm with you on this one.

However, this can't be good news (depends how you look at it I suppose) for the Hickeys and the Voynovs imo. Teubert is relatively safe as he adds a physical dimension the others are lacking.

How does a guy like this remained a free agent all this time?

Gotta give kudos to DL and his boys for another great signing!

From the looks of it, Muzzin is a better Teubert at this point.

I'm not seeing much pims out of Muzzin but he does have pretty good size at 6'2 and 216 lbs.

Personally, I'd still rather see Voynov or Hickey get moved over Teubert. We've never had a homegrown thug on defense and I for one would like to see Teubert fulfill that role.

46 out of 50.

On that list Teubert, Clifford, and Jones don't count since they're still in Juniors.

While it's nice I'd still take it with a grain of salt until it plays out a little more. If you'll recall, both Teddy Purcell and Joe Piskula were hotly pursued college free agents that the Kings beat out multiple teams to sign.

Fast forward to today, nobody really talks about Piskula even being in the picture to play with the team and a lot of folks are waiting and hoping that Purcell is sent packing.

You just never know how young kids and projections that are sometimes a gamble at best are going to work out, you know?

I didn't see any elbow in those hits. Sure first one looks that way but his arm/elbow comes up after the hit. 2nd hit he leaves his feet but no elbow. 3rd one was nothing, high sticking.

DL and the staff like their Dman and this is a good depth signing. Muzzin brings some toughness to the blueline

agree! But I think it's a good sign that these kids are willing to sign in L.A. It shows that the Kings are becoming a viable option and the staff is commited to the youth movement and yes the kings will not hit on every one of them but it's nice to see the signings.
