off season trade idea with the Oilers

Last thing I heard was the it was looking more and more like Scotty Nierder may not be back with the Ducks next year

How about Peter Holland or Jake Gardiner and the flyer first rounder in 2011(I am assuming this pick will be in around the 20th over all) for Souray and the rights to Linus OMark?

I'd do it. Why are the Oilers trying to move Souray?

with the oilers it is a bigger issue type problem

oilers are somewhat hand tied due to some contracts--and it is not that we want to trade Souray--it is that with Lubor, Gilbert and Souray on the back end making 15mill for the next few years--some of us oiler fans are thinking that to free up some money elsewhere we need to make a sacrifice somewhere--

Oilers are not even a playoff team at this point in time and Souray could make a playoff team better

If the Ducks could free up enough salary to make this trade happen this year I would love to see them add Souray. The biggest weakness the Ducks have at the moment is a top pairing defenseman, while Whitney has been playing much better of late, he's still not an ideal solution and Niedermayer has also struggled this year.

I wouldn't make this trade.

We need to build up some prospect depth, and this trade puts us in the same position we were in before we traded for Pronger. I'd rather try and sign a d-man in the offseason than trade essentially two first round picks for an older often injured defenseman.

Especially since it looks like we will need more than one defenseman to become a winning team

Yeah, good move. Let's trade half of our future for an injury prone d-man.
Come on now, Souray is good, but he's no Pronger.

This is team is pretty much done, I say keep the prospects and the picks and rebuild the team keeping also the core of Getz, Perry and Ryan.

It's pretty unlikely whoever we draft and Gardiner won't be anywhere near as good as Souray is though. And it's not like we have an experienced top pairing defenseman signed past this year anyway and there will be very few choices in free agengy this year.

Adding Souray is lame.
Nieds isn't leaving according to Bob.

Omark is worth nothing. We suck at developing European talent, or convincing them to stay.

Souray would be easily worth that package if healthy. But he's never healthy.

Not only that, but when Scotty and Teemu retire (it doesn't sound like Murray will consider trading them away for futures), the Ducks are more in need of rebuilding than in acquiring short term improvements. They're just too far away from competing. The Oilers would only move such a major contributing piece if they were also rebuilding. Meaning the teams would be in the same mode and poor trade partners.

But his name is Linus. That alone is enough to make me want him on the Ducks.

Hell no for that price. I mean I'd love to have Souray but he's too prone for injuries and thus doesn't warrant that price.

Ducks need their prospects.

Murray can go shopping on the UFA market July 1st instead.

Some good young d-men that could fit the Ducks long term plans (4-6 yr deals):

Paul Martin
Dan Hamhuis
Anton Volchenkov
Carlo Colaiacovo
Zbynek Michalek

Some older d-men who could help for the short term (1-3 yr deals):

Willie Mitchell
Sergei Gonchar
Kim Johnsson
Derek Morris
Pavel Kubina
Toni Lydman
Marek Zidlicky

Murray seems to be the type of GM who is incredibly cheap and relies on paying guys peanuts in hope that they will overachieve, rather than paying established players what they're worth which is why I doubt any players from the above list are Ducks next season.

Let's see what he will do with a lot of millions out of the books finally before judging.

I'm sorry but I would puke if Souray was a duck. Yeah he is good offensively, part of this has to do with the fact that he has 20 attempted shots on goal per game ( about 8 of which hit the net ), he's injury prone, he's somewhat aged, and like every offensive minded d-man ( some exceptions to this rule ) he consistently makes poor defensive decisions, and guys blow by him into the zone very easily.

I lived in Edmonton and have seen Souray play in real life many many times, when he was in Montreal I thought he was great, but being able to see him in action on a regular basis in Edmonton has changed my mind. I do like his attitude towards the game though, he hates to lose and he's a good leader. Not what we need though.

Isn't Souray actually good defensively in his zone, but prone to horrible turnovers and poor transition defense? At least that was my impression of him. That and he's actually a pretty tough guy, which we would need if there was a chance of us competing this year.

He's better than Whitney defensively, that's for sure. But that's not really saying much...

Yeah, I wouldn't say he's poor though, although it's not a strength of his. His shot is a rocket, easily top 5 in the league as far as power goes and he's an awesome fighter and is willing to clear the front of the net. Pretty much everything we lack from the blueline this year....

I like the idea of adding souray but not at that price. The bottom line is that we are rebuilding right now, this would just slow the process.
