RDS: Kovalchuk Looking For League Max

RDS is reporting that the Thrashers and their star are further apart in contract negotiations than originally thought. He is reportedly asking for the league max of $11M/year.

That's nuts. I think he's looking for a way out of Atlanta that makes it not his fault, since he can always say "well I wanted to stay but they lowballed me".

The worse thing is, some team will give it to him.

He should be somewhere around 7-8M.

Interesting, Mr. Bugg; but if I'm reading into the subtext you're hinting at here, I don't really think we have the assets / cap room / competitiveness to satisfy either the ATL organization, or Kovalchuk (whom I'd guess is wanting to win the cup, right?). I realize he hits UFA this off-season, and there's lots of pressure on ATL to turn him into tangible assets should it look like he won't re-sign with them -- but there are better trade partners for them, I'd think i.e. Philly, LA, etc. if it comes down to a trade deadline deal.

If it goes pear shaped on the Thrashers and no deal is made, nor does he re-sign there, I'd expect the Rangers to come into play as well for his services. Still, thanks for posting this.

How does he expect a team to surround him with any kind of depth with that kind of money? It's a selfish move, he doesn't care about winning apparently, just cashing a cheque.

EDM was willing to give this Vanek guy $10 M per season.....Kovy is worth $1 M more a season than Vanek easily.....If EDM has the cap space they will pay.

Meh, possibly gives him an out for not wanting to stay in Atlanta. Wouldn't be surprised if he signs for around 8.5M on a 'Good' team that gives him a chance for the Cup.

Ahh....so it only counted would have counted as $7 M eh..... does that mean Lowe thought Horcoff was as good as Vanek because he handed Horcoff basically that money? (Off topic, but I am still trying to figure out the logic of the Horcoff contract)

There was a $10 M per yr offer there even though the cap hit was $7 M right? I was sure they offered him $10 M for the first yr at least?...or has following this team and their offers at big name players who never end up here, finally made me lose my mind?

If he makes it to free agency he'll get some insane 15 year contract that pays him all the money up front. With the Rangers...

I am not trying to be rude here but I think you need to learn a little more about how the Salary cap works in the NHL.

Without getting into semantics the only real number that matters to most teams is the actual cap hit.

Vanek has a cap hit of $7.143M per season, Horcoff is $5.5M per season. They are not really close at all. (Also I am not trying to defend the Horcoff contract at all, I think it is terrible and was negotiated in the worst possible way)

Looking at the age of Kovalchuk unless they handed him a 12+ year contract the figure that is being quoted in RDS would likely be the cap hit number and not just for one season in the contract.

I doubt that's the problem.

Atlanta will probably pay any price to keep their star.

Although I don't think RDS is too reliable.

2 of those guys were still RFA's though... not a fair comparison.

I could see some ridiculous contract like this.

11-11-11-11-11-11-8-5-3-2-1-1-1

For a like 6.7M a year for 13 years.

So he thinks he's worth 2 million more than Ovechkin, and 2.3 mil more than Crosby and Malkin.

I'd bet $20 that Kovalchuk's not getting anymore than 9 mil per season.

Great player, but no way he's worth the highest contract in the league. Any organization willing to pony up that amount of cash deserves that kind of long term boat anchor.

Edmonton Oilers General Manager Steve Tambellini has just announced...

I'd always thought RDS was the French version of TSN? Which would make it a de facto standard of reliability, unless I'm incorrect.

RDS was the first to announce the Heatley no deal.
