Season Series
Date Location Result
Dec 11, 2009 STL EDM 5 - STL 3

This is the second of four meetings between the teams this season. The Oilers earned a 5-3 win against the Blues on Dec. 11 at the Scottrade Center. Gilbert Brule scored twice in the victory.

The Story
Both teams have plagued by inconsistency this season and continue to experience difficulties with stringing wins together. The Oilers have lost three in a row, while St. Louis earned a 3-1 win at Vancouver on Sunday after dropping back-to-back games.

Team Scope:

Blues: David Backes and Ty Conklin saw to it that St. Louis opened its four-game road trip in winning fashion on Sunday. Backes scored twice and Conklin was solid in a 29-save effort as the Blues earned a hard-fought win against the Canucks at GM Place.

"Three tough buildings to play in," Conklin said of the road trip that continues on Monday and Edmonton and Calgary on Wednesday. "Three teams that are ahead of us, three teams that we're chasing. This is a good start."

Oilers: Edmonton enters Monday's action having lost its last three games. The most recent defeat came on Saturday night, as Alex Ovechkin scored twice in a 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals at Rexall Place. The Oilers held a 2-0 lead after two periods before falling apart in the final 20 minutes.

"Great players can do those sort of things to you sometimes," Edmonton coach Pat Quinn said. "Based on our first couple periods, we should have had a better result. We should have expected a better result and that's what is disappointing."

Oilers goalie Jeff Deslauriers has started 14 consecutive games, the longest stretch of his career.

Who's Hot
Backes' two goals on Sunday give him nine for the season. … Oilers forward Shawn Horcoff scored on Saturday against the Caps. It was his third goal in six games.

Injury Report
Oilers center Marc Pouliot (sports hernia) and goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin (back) are day-to-day. Forwards Fernando Pisani (colitis) and Mike Comrie (mono) are out indefinitely, and right wing Ales Hemsky (shoulder) is done for the season.

Another tough test for the Oilers, as the Blues are a different team on the road. They won last night though, which is a good thing. They won't have a fresh loss on their minds.

This one... The Oilers just have to win. If there's any urgency in that locker room, we'll know it tonight.

To quote Journey:

"Some will win, some will lose, some are born to sing the Blues"

Oilers have to do the first and make St. Louis to do the latter two.

One of the TEAM 1200 morning personalities here in Ottawa said that he ran into Hilary Duff at the Sens game on Saturday night and she said that Comrie is expected back in the next couple games.

Bringing Comrie into the lineup might not help with this team as he will force either Nilsson or Potulny out of there spot.

She moved here when Comrie was last with the Sens. Im not sure if she is still living here, but I think her sister is since the show/movie she is filming is in the area.

Please lose.

Last in the WC by Christmas would be a good place to really start the tank job in 2010.

The Oilers will **** it all up like they always do and finish outside the playoffs and without a top 5 pick.

No reason to predict the worst team in the West to win anything right now. In fact, we are due for a severe thumping at the hands of someone. JDD was stellar in the first 40 minutes on Saturday.

I am going to predict 8-3 Blues. Reminiscent of the Chicago shellings of last season.

This season could be the best thing to happen to the franchise since the Pronger trade in the summer of 2005. The injuries provide a bit of a crutch to management. We can hopefully shed some contracts at or ahead of the deadline.

Id like to believe that will happen, but Im not sure what it will take for Tambo and KLo to conclude that this team is not good enough and is not just a couple upgrades at key positions away from competing. Unfortunately, as long as Lowe is involved with player decisions, I dont think this team will be in asset selling mode.
