Paul Martin

What's the word on this guy? When will he return? How do you think he'll do when he gets back?

He'll be his normal, reliable, 30 point defensive shutdown puck-moving all-together awesome self.

When, though, that's a question. Not a clue.

TG is suspicious about why Martin is taking so long to heal:

I have a sneaky suspicion that Martin might need surgery, but that’s just a guess by me. After Martin was initially injured on Oct. 24 in Pittsburgh, the team ruled out surgery to insert a rod in Martin’s arm that might have helped him heal faster.

Of course, I could be completely wrong on that.

If he needs it then just get it done. It's not like we're struggling without him. What's important is having him at 100% in March and beyond..

I agree. Fraser has been awesome for us thus far and Andy *** Greene has been an absolute revelation for this team. Couple that with sturdy work by Salvy, One-eyed Whitey, and OrrDuya(as long as he doesn't give the puck away late...yikes!) and we will not only survive but excel without him.

That's not to say that having him healthy won't hurt but why take a chance of further injury since there's no real rush to get him back? I say that if he needs Surgery, then DO IT.

(oh..did I mention Clarky and Zubrusaurus returning soon? This team will be fine.)

As already stated, I don't care how long it takes him to get back, so long as he's healthy when it matters. We absolutely will need him when crunch time comes around.

If he were to need surgery, that would still be pretty demoralizing for the team and Martin. Why couldn't the training staff and whoever else oversees and evaluates that stuff see this when the injury occurred, or at least not this long after...

Why would it be demoralizing to the team? The have 8 regulation loses without him.
The medical staff probably thought his body would heal properly without the rod, which i assume (not a medical doctor) is the better way for it to heal. Well, it didn't happen, they couldn't have known. It's not like he has broken lots of bones before.

Does this sort of thing happen a lot though? I'm just stabbing in the dark here. Do a lot of athletes wind up needing surgery after a bone doesn't heal correctly a few months later?

This would definitely be demoralizing for Martin. That means a couple more months out of the lineup.. more than half the year. As for the team, maybe not.. but I know it demoralizes me to know that the Devils #1 Dman would be out for a few more months, despite the winning. I'm still waiting for the performance to dip, this has been unreal so far this season.

As long as Martin is back in peak form for the playoffs, I don't care how long he misses. If he needs the surgery, do it.

I don't care if we shut down Martin through the Olympics. He needs to be 100% like everyone has said.

he just has weak genes, nothing you can do about it. you could see it coming because he never recovers from minor stuff, but surgery for a small break is pretty excessive.

we're just going to have to wrap him in bubble wrap from now on.

Agreed entirely. If it is surgery, I bet the reason he didn't have it done already was the Olympics, but at this point I just want him back in the lineup come, say, March.

As long as he can get back into top form in time for the playoffs, I'm fine with this. If there's any question that playing in the Olympics could set him back, I want him to stay home.

The team is already playing great without him, he could be a sort of "deadline acquisition" that spurs the team to even greater heights.

Losing Martin would be a HUGE blow for Team USA. He's by far the best all around defenseman on the team.

Obviously his career with the Devils is more important, but as an American it would really suck for him to not play in Vancouver.

My Team USA Martin jersey and I agree wholeheartedly. That said, we don't have a snowball's chance in hell anyway, so might as well let Brodeur pad his international stats and let everyone else get healthy.

How great would it be for Marty to win the Cup, Vezina, Conn Smythe, and Gold Medal in the same year. On a Jacques Lemaire coached team.

I think Canada would explode and Gary Bettman would commit ritual suicide.

I dont know how you can possibly look at that lineup at think Team USA doesnt " have a snowball's chance in hell" of winning.

"Ron Wilson's coaching staff for the U.S. Olympic hockey team is complete, with the addition of assistants John Tortorella and Scott Gordon."

That's why.

Hockey is not a sport where you toss the best players together and it automatically = WIN.

This isnt NBA basketball.
