Canes start 2010-11 season in Europe

In other news, a league executive confirmed that Columbus, Boston, Minnesota, San Jose, Phoenix and Carolina will be the six teams that start next season in Europe.
Not quite sure how I feel about this...

It should be great exposure for the Canes, and will be cool to be a part of, but I am uncertain about the travel effects and of course the loss of a home game. Also of course selfishly I wanted to go whenever we did this but can't next year!

I guess it is safe to assume that we will be playing in Helsinki.

Hopefully we get to play Helsinki since we already have the Finnish national squad on our team. Depending on who we played it would probably be like another home game (assuming the other team doesn't have multiple Finns as well).

Wild and Canes will probably get to play against each other in Helsinki.

I need to start a Helsinki Fund. I really want to go. There's just no way they have us play anywhere else, but Helsinki.

I say its Canes/Minny in Helsinki
Columbus in Swedan since they have the most swedes.

Definitely Canes/Minny in Helsinki. Is it sure it'll be a meeting in Sweden, though? The Blue Jackets have four Swedes, but none of them are stars, and Columbus aren't exactly that well known here. The Bruins and the Coyotes have zero, the Sharks have one.

I'm guessing the Coyotes will play the Bruins or the Blue Jackets in the Czech Republic with 5 and 2 or 3 Czechs, respectively.

Either way, looking at the Canes, it probably won't do next year's record any good, but it will result in quite a few new jerseys sold. Particularly of Ruutu, Jokinen and Pitkänen.

"We've been in discussions for a few weeks," said Rutherford, who is attending the NHL governors meeting in California. "There has been no confirmation of it, but there's a good chance we will be in it. The discussions have been good and everything moving in the right direction."

The Hurricanes have three Finns in their lineup -- Jussi Jokinen, Joni Pitkanen and Tuomo Ruutu. All are expected to play for Finland 's Olympic team in the upcoming Vancouver Winter Games.

Rutherford said travel expenses are borne by the league. He said a decision should come "in the fairly near future" -- last year's announcement was made in February.

Other teams being considered appear to be Phoenix, San Jose, Columbus, Boston and Minnesota, and it's possible the NHL could send six teams to the games.

Compuware had the title sponsorship of the 2009 NHL Premiere games in Stockholm and Helsinki.

After a very quick check on Expedia, it looks like the small pocket change of $1,700.00 and 15 hours each way will get you a round trip flight from Raleigh to Helsinki. Looks like I might be needing some assistance with my Finland Fund if anyone is interested in helping...

Last time the host in Helsinki (Jokerit hockey club's owner) paid the NHL teams expenses so the tickets for the 2 games cost a lot.

The atmosphere in the games were quite lame cause there were no home heros in both teams (Hawks/Panthers) so getting Hurricanes and Wild would be huge. Only if it's one of the teams I'm going to get the ticket no matter how much it costs.

Expedia sucks.

Try this agency - www.atiflights.com. Round trip will cost you less than $900.00 . I used them earlier this year for Europe travel and it worked well.

It would make me a happy girl to go see this game live.

Of course, with my luck I'll lose my job next week and wind up having to move back to North Dakota. :/

Do we have any idea of the dates for these games?

I found a roundtripper on orbitz for $860 earlier. Dates obviously determine the final cost.
