1st of all, the Flyers system isn't one that typically lends points to defensemen. It's why despite having many good defensmen they typically have few points.

Johnsson is the exception. He has a green light to do what he sees fit. But he's also in his prime and one of the most talented defensemen in the game right now.

If Bouwmeester wants to take a risk and try to make a play he can.
Pitkanen can't. If Pitkanen takes a risk and it backfires, he sits.
Bouwmeester just plays on.

You can argue who you like more all you want.
But to argue Pitkanen benefites from his system is rediculous.
The *system* he's in gives him allmost no minutes and very little freedom to create. He has to play defense 1st and thats that.

It's a lot easier to put up points on a crap team playing a lot of minutes when you can screw up all the time then it is to put up points on a good team where one mistake means you don't get to play the rest of the game.
Totally agreed. Also, being a blue chip prospect on a top team doesn't automatically make you better, or even help you make the team for that matter.

Just look at the Detroit Red Wings defensive prospects over the past decade...Anders Eriksson and Maxim Kuznetsov are two names that come to mind that were supposed to make major impacts on the Red Wing blueline. After numerous chances, they were sent packing. And this was a perennial Stanley Cup contender with an aging defense corp.

Pitkanen with Bouwmeester right behind and Whitney a distant 3rd.

By the way, I think Whitney does have a lot of offensive potential, but that MrKnowNothing is overstating the impact of "learning" to play defense. I read a number of reports detailing how badly Whitney looks against college level forwards as a Junior this year, and just have a gut feeling that he won't play in the NHL any time soon. Objectively speaking though, Whitney will likely develop into a good offensive defenseman though. I'd rather have Eminger by a country mile though.

A good poll would be Whitney up against Eminger and other non-blue chip defensemen. Actually I think i'll make one up.
So what happened to this idea?

For much of the last two seasons, I'd say they were pretty equal, but Whitney right now has stepped right into the Calder Cup playoffs and has been one of the best players on the ice in every game he's been in. His defense has been great, too.

And I'm going to go out on a limb and say that both players are probably going to be huge busts. I just don't buy into the hype that surrounds these two players. Ovechkin did nothing at the WJC. And he's being called a better player than Kovalchuk? Please, Kovalchuk dominated at the WJC. DOMINATED. As for Syndey, he's got the luxury of playing the QMJHL, a truly offensively heavy league. If he were to play in the WHL or OHL and put up the same numbers, then I'd be impressed. Truth of the matter is that he gets roughed up and his coach pulls him out of the games. He's gonna get killed in the NHL and I don't believe for one second either player is going to live up to the hype. As for the defenseman question, well, I'm a Philadelphia fan, and out of the three, I'd rather have.......Phaneuf

I think this season I saw why Pitkanen was chosen 4th overall, and not top 2.
