Staal pretty easily right now. He is anchoring our defense, and playing big minutes (played 30 minutes a few games ago) and when he does get on the scoresheet it's always on an important play.

Callahan based on effort?? Was Jed Ortmeyer ever one of the best players on the team?

Hey, give me a blue jersey and put me on the Garden ice and I'll destroy my body trying to get the job done. Doesn't mean I'll be a good player.

It's difficult to separate the two forwards I think deserve this title of 3rd best on our team, and the two defenseman I think could be called our 3rd best player. Those players being Prospal and Dubinsky, and Del Zotto and Staal.

IMO Dubinsky is better than Prospal. I'd say Staal over Del Zotto.

The way I see it:

1 and 1a. Gaborik and Lundqvist
3. Staal
4. Del Zotto
5. Dubinsky
6. Anisimov
7. Prospal
8. Callahan
9. Avery
10. Girardi

I tend to put emphasis on age which others might not agree with. I see value in that and that a lot of them should get better. I also think in terms of cap hits--or value on ice for the money they make.

I think MDZ and his brilliant 2 line passing is really winning us games. #18 is one of my favorite rangers - and I almost, in vain, want to choose Girardi just in appreciation of what he has been doing after his abysmal start to the season.

That's more a list for most valueble player for this organization, but since the question simply was "Who's the Third Best Player on this team?" and I assume it is meant as present, then it's Propspal easily for me.

I think Staal is the third best player... and he is only going to get better... He can be a shut down defenseman who can also get about 40-50 points per season logging 25-30 minutes per game...

I can see the arguments to make for both Prospal and Staal, but I think that without Prospal we're atrocious offensively, without Staal we're still asking Lundqvist to carry us 5 out of 6 nights.

Has to be Staal! This swiss cheese D would be one big hole without Staal's 24min a night.

Staal and in my opinion it isn't even close.

He struggled a lot in the beginning of the year. Since than he has been playing some of the best shut down defense we have seen all year. His positioning his there, his instinct is there, his physical play is there, etc. Once he stopped trying to rush the puck up on every shift where he would turn it over and start focusing on defense a little bit more he turned his game around ten fold. Staal is one of the best shut down defense men in the conference and I'll stick by that statement when I see him play the way he has been playing.

After him I'd say Prospal because the effort is usually there for him and he has produced quite a bit this season but he has been a bit streaky and inconsistent this year.

Than it is a toss up between Dubinsky / Callahan because they bring a complete game to their table.

And after those two I'd say MDZ for his offensive contributions to the team.

Well, I love Staal as much as the next guy but let the kid hit 20-points first before we start talking about 40-50 points. Maybe in his prime he will be doing that as a shut down defense man and that is still a big MAYBE, but I don't see Staal doing that any time soon.

I'd have to vote the defenseman who can play 30 minutes a game, play in all areas of the ice and in all situations.

Who are the first two?

Gabby is the obvious number one. Who's that easy number two, you speak of?

He's not so good as in the beginning of the season while Staal got back on the track and he is clearly our best d-man right now.

Yeah... You are right.. I got a little ahead of myself.. Let's just sit back and watch Staal hopefully develop into a shut down defenseman with 40-50 points per season... The potential is there..
