If Paul Martin is on Team USA... good or bad?

I'm sure you've all seen the article on the front page of the Devils site... well I found this interesting

Quote:
Lamoriello did not rule out Martin joining Team USA for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

I dont think that should be affected, he said. If hes selected, which I would assume he will be Ill be speaking to (Team USA GM) Brian Burke, certainly, today this all just came about, and thats out of my hands.

The Winter Games open on Feb. 12, with the hockey tournament beginning on Feb. 16.

I would not go so far as saying this means he misses, Lamoriello said.
Do you think it would be a good thing if he makes it on USA or a bad thing?

On one hand, he has suffered another setback, and he's already fragile. We don't need him to return from injury and go straight into the Olympics right before the playoff push.

On the other hand, if he plays and comes back from the Olympics in good shape, it could be a bonus because he could step right in and contribute, since all of the rust would be knocked off.

Personally, I don't want him to risk it. I do want to see him on the USA roster and I understand how important it is to play for your country, but he's a paid professional first.

I don't think it's a risk at all, he's slated to come back in a month which would give a lot of time between the Olympics and when the games start, and I think Martin wants to represent his country since Martin will defiantly be the #1/#2 Dman, it's a huge honor and he's playing a huge role.

I think the Olympics would be a good chance for him to get back into form for the remainder of the NHL season.

As an American, I want him there. As a Devils fan, I'd rather he take the time off.

If hes alright and selected to the team, great. As a Devils fan and as a hockey fan, I would be excited to see Paul Martin alongside the other world class players representing his country and the game itself.

In general all this talk of players getting hurt and/or tired in the Olympics is kind of like making a mountain out of a knee-high pile of sand. Yes, the risks are there, but its kind of a sorry excuse to "protect" your "property" if the players arent permitted to participate.

The Olympic Games take place every fourth year. Its a great honour, or at least it should be, to represent your country.

I 100% agree with what you said about honor. As a young kid, I wanted to win a gold for USA before I even thought about winning a Stanley. The good thing about Martin's situation is that he probably won't come out fatigued since he has already had such a long break. I'm just worried about losing him for the year because he's so fragile. He's only played 82 games once in his career.

Good olympic performance = more money in the off-season, so no.

That too. Let's keep up his injury prone reputation and squash any rumors that he's a world class defenseman.

The level of competition is gonna be at it's ultimate high once the Olympics kick off. That's the only reason why I'd rather see him off the team cause he just suffered a setback on his broken arm and being a top pairing guy whitout any playing time since mid october might not be the best thing for him and the Devils organisation.

I'll be more then happy with Lou's decision cause I know for a fact that he won't jeopardize the franchise over team USA.

I don't think he's gonna play. His injury is going to take him right up to the end of January, so that will alot him only about three or four games before the Olympics. I'm not sure the U.S. staff would want him stepping right into the Olympics like that after being on the shelf for three months, but we'll see.

If he's healthy and have played for the Devils by then, I am all for it. If he isn't healthy enough to play for the Devils, he isn't healthy enough to play for country.

I think it could be like a conditioning stint for him, but as people have said, it will raise his value if he plays well. We'll see, he has to be selected for the team before we do any speculating.

I think it will be a situation where he is selected but will be dropped later if he isn't ready to go. The roster rules allow an NHL player to be dropped from the roster by a certain date if they are injured.

Agreed. Depending on when he comes back, that would give him ample time to get back into a groove.
