Can someone enplane why the Russian jersey has an eagle on it? I haven’t had any success searching it online. I’m assuming it’s like a coat of arms or something like that.

The Russian Coat of Arms is the Byzantine double headed eagle, which in turn is a version of the original Roman eagle crest. It's because a Russian Tsar once married a Byzantine princess in order to have claims to become a true emperor. Thus, the eagle, the symbol of the empire.

Ahh interesting, I think I remember reading about that. Was that around 11th or 12th century?

The Austrians have really competed and got a bunch of saves - alot of 5 on 3 action.

The have shown confidence and no fear. Far better than the Latvian farce.
The Russians have not had much of a plan on the PP but they will get sharper.

1400-something, after or around the fall of Constantinople, actually.

Well IIRC Byzantium fell around 1450. Must have been before I would think, although I'm sure I reads this stroy before but I just can't remeber exactly.

So Austria has scored twice against Russia... doesn't bode well for Russian chances in this tourny.

Love the major upgrade to the Austrian uni's, glad they got rid of that stupid 'A' they've had for decades...

1453. And I'm pretty sure it was after. Probably 10-15 years after. It was done in order to continue the line of emperors and to make Russia a claimant to be the successor of Rome (as all true "empires"), implicit in that the protector and head of Christianity.

Best part of this game was the Russian announcer explaining to us that the song being played was "Sevan nayshon Army by Ze Whait Straips"

Byzantine is not correct, there was no Byzantine empire, the term was coined by some idiot German historian in 18 century to call roman empire in the name of the village where was build the city of Constantinople. Double headed eagle is a Roman empire coat of arms, replacing one-headed eagle to reflect that the country now placed in the east and the west.

Roman pope agreed that the roman princess Sophia Paleolog would marry not the tsar, but at that time the knyaz of Moscow Ivan Rurick, from old rus konung. Pope agreed, that Moscow's konung would take the roman coat of arms and eventually russians took the holly roman empire flag as well.

For some reason Germany adopted the flag and the coat of arms as well, but choses to have the old one headed eagle as coat of arms. USA took it too.

Sophia started to call her husband Caesar in Russian tsar.

What do you mean there was no Byzantine Empire? The term is evidently based on the ancient Greek city of Byzantium, founded in 667 BC. This city eventually became Constantinople and was the center of what we know as the Byzantine Empire. The city was eventually renamed to Istanbul and is today the largest and most important city in Turkey.

Plenty of countries still use the double-headed eagle, while some use it on their flag.

Serbia

Albania

Montenegro

I like the talent level, but this team is very disorganized. We'll be eaten alive by Canada if this continues.
