It's easier to try and ignore and make fun of the numbers, then actually try to look at them and understand what they're saying, eh?

no, the numbers say we have horrendous goaltending (.885sv%)

With only Carolina (.883sv%) receiving comparably horrendous goaltending this year so far.

Of course, that breaks down more accurately as us receiving "mediocre" goaltending with Gustavsson in net (.905sv%), "bad" goaltending with McDonald in net (.892sv%), and horrendously laughable AHL goaltending with Toskala in net (.869sv%).

Games like tonight are where the numbers don't really help. Toskala had a better game tonight than Gusto did against the Isles. Gusto gets the better numbers, Toskala gets the win. Doesn't change Toskala's poor season, but this is where the numbers get questioned. Toskala could've been better tonight, but he came up big when needed, made a number of point blank saves on some good scorers and it kept us close enough to win.

If Toskala was 6'3" with longer legs, he might have saved an extra goal or two tonight.

So then what's gusto's excuse? Could have used one or two of those extra saves last night from a 6'3 guy with longer legs.

what your stats are showing is that Gustavsson is clearly the superior goaltender and that our team plays better (Better record) defense looks better (Less G.A average) our PK looks better (80%). Funny how that works.

IF this season is going to turn around Gustavssson has to be our savior.

Gustavsson is clearly the better goalie.

What's great to see, is a strong progression for Gustavsson. He's only getting better, as he plays more games.

are you kidding me? i cant even imagine why someone would try to argue *against* those numbers

also, the big problem is that it is clearly evident that the team has lost confidence in toskala. i bet anyone who played any level of hockey would understand how de-motivating it is to have a goalie who can let in an unscreened blunder any minute..

Personally I lose quite a bit of confidence as soon as I see Toskala is getting the start, Im pretty our players confidence in Toskala really effects how we play too.

Sometimes I think our defence can start running around out of position, each player trying to do it all themselves usually ending up in mad scrambles in front of goal.

I think this shows a lack of confidence in each other, trying to do each others jobs as well as their own and it seems our defence do this even more in front of Toskala.

At the same time its no co-incidence that opposition goalies seem to steal games and keep out huge amounts of shots against us, partly because theyre better than our goalies and partly because we have quite a few players that love to play on the perimeters of the game and take weak shots from bad angles just so they dont need to go to the dirty areas.

If I were a goalie Id be rubbing my hands together at the thought of facing the leafs, we make them look great by taking 50 shots a game, 45 of them just thrown generally towards the net from a bad position.

Yeah I totally agree with that, as soon as you lose confidence in the goalie behind you the way you play changes, you start to think about maybe not pinching incase someone gets in behind you or getting over to block a shot rather than picking up the spare man and letting the goalie take the shooter.

I think maybe thats why this teams so streaky this season, lack of confidence means theyre all running around trying to do the work of everyone else as well as themselves, being pulled out of position and exposed then heads drop once the inevitable happens !

Gustavsson has provided the team a sub-2.00 GAA and better than .925 S% over his past 8 starts. How much more can he do? It's only translated into 3 wins, of course.

Last night he got beat on two great shots from a guy who's made a career of scoring from those two spots. Props to McCabe, he's still got one of the best point shots in the game. Otherwise he stopped a whole lot of shots he had no business stopping - Stillman's wrister off the rush from the left circle in the first period comes to mind. And barring a few relapses (notably on the 2-on-1 Beauch stopped) he's been staying more square to his shooters, not overcommitting when he switches sides, and overall playing much better positionally than he has all season. His rebound control has been better, too, which is a key to the improvement in his game, I think. Often his over-committing was a result of scrambling to get into position to stop second chances on the horrific rebounds he was giving out. I think given more NHL experience and more time with Allaire, and this team has a legitimate #1.

So the team has a goaltender, it's time to start looking at other sources for 'the problem'.
