Its pretty classless if you ask me. You are up 11-0...dump it in and get off. I hope USA gives it right back to them. USA had them last year on the ropes and I think everyone else is hoping for the same thing. You don't think Latvia knows they suck? Why continue to pound them.

Figured it wouldn't take long for this to pop up. Would you rather the Canadian players play keep away all night? Or just skate circles around them and have them look like idiots.

Doesn't it have to do in case of a tie breaker scenario? at this point we're +3 compared to Sweden in goal differential.

It all has to do with the tie breaker rule. Blame the rules. not the team.

Goal differential is the 2nd tie-breaker. Blame the federation for forcing this.

at this point playing for goal differential is bs. but what can you do, this isn't some mite league in front of a crowd of parents. its national tv, world jr championships, what are you supposed to do, let up? im sure these guys will still play 50% in the third and have fun like they did for most of the second. latvia is just brutal i almost feel bad

ehh i didn't see the other scores...wtf 10-1? 11-0 after two? supposed to be a touch more competitive between some of these countries i thought

Goal differential is a tie-breaker.

Learn the rules before you trash a team.

Neither side gains anything from Canada 'letting up'. Latvians can just feel worse that they aren't even worth a full effort and Canadians can feel better for 'being conscious of the little guys feelings', which is selfish.

Besides every kid who has ever played youth hockey has been on the bad and good side of a hugely lopsided game, and thats at a far younger age that this.

These kids are almost adults, they can deal with it.

The U.S team will do the exact same thing. You can guaran-damn-tee it.

I disagree. In the NHL, if it's 10-0 you do.

In international hockey, where goal differential actually comes into play fairly frequently, you think teams should let up? Hell no.

The US fluked to a 3-0 lead last year, and then showed their true colours, and made the dumb mistake of poking the bear.

I always get surprised when I see something like that. It's ok to get hit, to fight, start scrums, talk about mothers.... but you never ever dominate the other team for all 60 minutes because it can hurt their little feelings?
I think when the other team feels sorry for you and starts playing with you like a kid, it's more insulting.

USA wouldn't let up against them either if they were in this position.

Get over yourself!

But with every game having a winner (head-to-head is the first tie-breaker) and the 3-2-1-0 point format what are the chances that it actually comes comes down to goal differential. It seems to me it is a less than remote chance as head-to-head would break it first (and there are no ties).

The tie-breaker stuff is just an excuse to run up the score because the actual chance it gets used is rare.

EDIT: BTW, yes USA would be doing the same thing. My point is more to there should be a mercy rule.

Letting up on a team in my opinion is far more insulting than continuing to give it your best.

To be on the safe side? Better to make sure you cover the goal differential spread, than to get bit in the ass at the end of the tournament if it does happen to be a factor.

Re: your edit.

But yeah, if the IIHF didn't promote running up the score (ie. have a tie-breaker that rewards it), then you might not see it as much.

Sweden wins 10-1 against the Czechs, meh, they are just trying to put themselves in good position for the tie breaker.

Canada leads 11-0 against Latvia, OMG THEY ARE TOTALLY CLASSLESS.

Does this make sense?

Because 3-way ties don't get broken if they're 1-1 against the other 2 teams.

BTW, USA beat Kazakhstan 12-0 last year, scoring 4 times in the last 10 minutes of the game.
