Well.. I think most agrees that it sucks to lose a game like that. I didnt like Sweden winning with 10-1 and I dont like Canada winning with 16-0..

But that's life, you cant just stop playing because the other team isnt doing all too good..

I think that it would be a closer game anyway, 5-3 (en) for the Americans. Latvia plays the Americans well.

I don't know, but 16 is just unacceptable. Should have been at least 20, dammit.

Would have been more insulting to stop trying to score and toying with them. I was hoping for 20, we're friendly people till hockey games start. Then you can all **** yourselves.

I remember Sweden, with Foresberg, beating Japan 20-2 in 1993.

Because if Canada ends up tying whichever team finishing 2nd, they'll need all the goal differential advantage they can get.

If it would be 12-games round robin (as opposed to 4), things wouldn't be this way.

I remember when i was 14 our local city soccer team went to play a tournament in England. We knew before hand that we didn't have a chance, and got blown out of every game. But yeah we expected it, it wasn't a big deal to us and we were just happy to get a trip to England out of it.

I expect its much the same for the Latvian's..

How do you tell players who are about to be drafted/are drafted to not do the best they can on the biggest stage they have?

Goal differential is a poor excuse.
When was the last time that goal differential was an important factor in this tournament.

It's one thing to run up a score against paid professionals and a completely different thing to run up the score against amateur kids.

meh

It was 15-0 vs Kazakhstan last year, this is just a yearly tradition.

I'm not overly excited about a 16-0 score but if you consider the kids have been "drilled" the last few weeks to play flat-out, on-the-edge hockey and this is their first game of the tournament. You think the coach all of a sudden, before the game says "Guys, Latvia is not as strong as us so play at 75% to not embarras them" - of course not. And if they hadn't come out playing flat-out, we would be criticizing the fact they weren't prepared. They gave 110% for a couple of periods and in the third they let up because they had such a big lead...

With no mercy, Team Mexico destroyed a weakened and overmatched Armenia team tonight at the Lomas Verdes Rink...."It was a goal a minute" said an un-named fan. 48 goals were scored in 60 minutes of play tonight with Armenia getting the goose egg.

The previous record of 44 goals scored was obliterated by a super fast and tenacious Team Mexico! Hockey History! 48 Goals!
I'm Armenian and I am soo laughing right now.
So who says 16-0 is bad now?

I'd also love to see this Super fast and tenacious Mexican team vs Team Canada.

Go Canada Go!!

they're in the same age group... and most people in that age group would view themselves as adults.

Just because it hasn't been that important in the past doesn't mean that the goal differential won't play a part now.

Players don't like it when other teams show a lack of respect by not playing a full game.

etc. etc.

Agreed. I played competitive soccer and we were up 15-0 (yes, I see the irony) to a team in a lower class division for a pre-tournament warm-up and we started just passing around the ball. It was a big game of keep away and I felt much more embarrassed of that action than I did playing our hardest.

Latvia may not be greatest team, but they need to go against the best competition for 60 minutes. It's the only way a team can improve. As someone said, it's not like football where you can kneel or run the ball all the time.

it was only a matter of time before this thread came

for the last time GOAL DIFFERENTIAL MATTERS

Not trying is embarrassing for both teams

That's so stupid, I'm not even Canadian and I think it's pure stupidity to stop playing your game because it "makes people feel bad". Don't play hockey if you want to be a little girl.

What else are they supposed to do? Shoot it wide when they have those chances? It's not like they can just roll their "checking lines" and not score, these guys have offensive skills too.

I thought we'd have some class and stop after 10.

Sadly, this team has shown that they do not have class. From their cheap captain to the players who dove in todays game to their coaching staff for not telling them to stop destroying a team that has no business being in the tourny to begin with.

I thought us Canadians were better than that. I thought we had more honor and class. Apparently not.
