he was a leader on the habs, groomed to wear a letter which he did, and played along koivu. his first 3 years he missed chances but he still put the puck in the net. playing with a koivu in his prime will net you at least 20 - which it did for Higgy.
last year, he had injuries, but he just became a shell of the player he can be. he lost his letter, a big deal here, to komisarek and whatever spin habs' brass put on it, it was clear it had to do with his conduct outside the rink.
gainey dealt him and that was also a shock because this guy was being groomed to take over the leadership on the team.
towards the end of last year after carbo was flushed gainey converted higgy into a checker--took him away from koivu after numerous missed chances, and played him with metro on the 4th line. he became a pk specialist but was probably the best hab player in a pathetic first round sweep by the bruins (he had 2 goals in 4 games).
higgy is a high maintenance fragile type player. he needs to be stroked and needs to feel wanted. i know, not a great combo. in mtl he was being groomed by carbo and by Muller (his favorite player growing up as a hab fan) but i think torts style 1000% does not mesh with the type of personality chris is.
finally chris was a die hard hab fan growing up and i believe he was both shocked and devastated to get dealt.
he had it great in mtl, probably too good too, and going home wasn't a blessing for him, it became a situation of too much pressure and spotlight - a different kind of pressure then montreal.
he also lost some very close buddies in price, komisarek, gorges and o'byrne..and for a guy like chris comfort and familiarity seemed important.

can he recover? i think he can become a quality two way winger again who will contribute with 20 goals per year, i don't think it will be with the rangers though.
i think chris could be back in montreal next year, if gainey could figure out a way to keep him under control..
a more likely spot is on the cheap with the leafs playing with his buddy komisarek
Say what you want about him not scoring, and believe me it is very annoying, but I am/get disgusted when anyone implicates that he, or any other hab has/had a drinking problem. That's so far from the truth its not even funny. Sure get on him for being a streaky scorer but he has been that way in the NHL and he will continue to be that way. Its just his game: work hard, good PKer, bang in the occasional rebound in front. Granted even I will admit he's lacking in the goal department but he tries real hard out there, and I've never seen him throw in the towel or stop trying.

I live with the guy, and our town is a summer spot.. Last 2 years I can count on one hand the amount of times he's gone out, he's not stupid he knows what's at stake. 2 years ago he was in same position(lacking in goals) and after all star break he woke up and was 2nd in league in goals scored behind Ovechkin.

as i mentioned, i hope it's not true, but those were the consistent and continuous rumors being mentioned. i'd like to see chris back with the habs someday.
one thing rags fans should know, carbonneau would sit chris down and show him dvds of his goals, constantly reminding him that he needed to simplify his game and play it north south and that 99.999% of his goals came from 10 feet from the net. nowhere else

Are you reading what I'm writing? I'm telling you directly it is not true. Take what the Montreal Gazette or whatever tabloid trash you obviously read, or from his own brother.

Hes the least of our problems ...one of the few players on this team that brings it every shift of every game.

There is more to playing hockey than scoring goals and he does a lot of good things on the ice.

Chris had 72 goals in his first 3 NHL seasons. Last season and this season,he has 16 goals combined. He was hurt last season. The Rangers need Chris to get on one of his streaky goal scoring runs or the season is going to be over by the end of this month. They need someone besides Gabby to score a goal.

He will be fine ...it only the halfway point of the season..Im sure the guy is gripping the stick way too tight...playing at MSG w/ friends and family all around..... if Im not mistaken this is a contract year for him as well.....he is doing everything right except scoring.

He is a Callahan/Dubinsky type of player in that he works hard every play and isn't a natural goal-scorer. How on Earth any of you pictured him as a Vanek type of guy when we acquired him is beyond me.

Generally Higgins is snakebit like O'Sullivan, but he has all the skills.
