Mikael Samuelsson to Team Sweden: "They can go **** themselves"

Freakin' awesome:

http://www.kelowna.com/2009/12/28/mi...-olympic-snub/

Another good quote from Samuelsson, after signing with the Canucks:

"Obviously that [money] was the key, I shouldn't lie."
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/stor...n-canucks.html

Good to see a player speak his mind for a change.

Refreshing honesty for change and not the normal politically correct jargon.

Haha! Hilarious, but I agree he shouldn't have made the team. I still don't know why we gave him 3 years...

I remember the TSN interview when he got signed to Vancouver, when asked why he signed for them he said something like " I shoudn't lie, it was the money". This guy speaks his mind even when not appropriate, I like it since I'm like that aswell.

I'd be a little ticked if Modin made it over me too.

Them naming Forsberg (health), Alfredsson (health), and Modin (sucks) over him had to sting.

Hope he goes on an absolute tear and makes them look stupid.

He's a versatile utility player who can put up points when he's hot and plays defensively responsible hockey when he's not. Great pick up IMO, and a reasonable price given what he brings (which includes veteran experience and defensive poise... shot selection is another story, but it seems to work for him). A very solid to great third liner who can very capably fill in on the top-two when needed. I think he could have and should have easily made the team over Modin or Hornqvist.

Seeing him shoot straight into the chest of the goalie 4-5 times a game will be sorely missed.

Seriously, Freddy Modin???????? He's a veteran and he can't even crack a Ken Hitchcock lineup.

Sweden in 2010 is my nominee for 2006 Canada-- too many over the hill dudes.

I think he's been good in his time so far here. He's doing what's required of him, though he's really inconsistent scoring wise like Wing fans said.

Looking at their current roster, they won't be repeating as champs. MS will get a measure of revenge...

Olympic goalies breathe a sigh of relief. No more having to tighten your chest and upper abdomen muscles to absorb the inevitable thud of a Samuelsson shot perfectly aimed to the top corner...of the logo on the front of your jersey.

I'd like to see an accuracy competition. Ray Bourque blind-folded and with a right-handed stick against Mikael Samuelsson shooting special pucks that are laser-designated to hit the target.

Bourque would win...unless Samuelsson's foam targets were squarely in the middle of the net. If that was the case, Bourque would be ****ed.

Refreshing honesty would be him saying "I deserved to be on the team, I'm good enough" not "Go **** yourselves"

No, they probably realized that they have zero use for him. What is he gonna do? They have enough capable goal-scorers. They wouldn't ask him to pass or back-check because those two words do not exist in his vocabulary.

Besides, if it came down to him or Modin, why would you choose him? Neither one is going to do anything much, but at least Modin is tough, gritty, and willing to do the dirty work in the corners.

This Swedish team clearly wants a physical identity. That's why their defense features Douglas Murray and Johnny Oduya to complement Kronwall and Ohlund. Kronwall and Murray might be the two most physical defensemen in all of hockey. ALL of their forwards are tough, gritty, and unafraid of getting hit to make a play. Samuelsson does not fit in.

who?

okay kidding. I know who samuelsson is, but somehow he's REALLY over-estimated himsellf. It's not like he's been setting the league on fire recently.. there're more than a couple of guys who'd be taken BEFORE his royal highness

Actually we have a better roster this time around, however.. so does everyone else

I would be pissed off I was Samuelsson as well. I didnt have him on my team either but if Modin was there instead of me... Yeah I would go mental

I don't mind the money, or the fact that we signed him, but 3 years? Seems like too long to me.

That's why they took Modin. He doesn't need to score to be useful, and is a tough and gritty character player that fits in with the mold of the 2010 team. He'll stand in front of the net, go into the corners, is unafraid to take the body, and honestly, when he's healthy, he's better than Samuelsson at the only thing Samuelsson is slightly decent at; scoring goals.

Mikael Samuelsson adds absolutely nothing to Sweden. Nothing. He is one of the least accurate-shooting regular NHL forwards in recent history. His defense is hardly more than mediocre, and well, I think we can agree that the words "physical", "gritty", and "tough" do not describe him. Ask a Detroit fan.

This is NHL ice. Sweden knows it will be a very physical tournament, and that's what they geared up for. And when you're going into a physical situation, trust me, you leave Mikael Samuelsson behind. It would be a different story of Samuelsson was better offensively. He's not.

This team's fortunes at the 2010 Olympics have exactly zero correlation to whether Fredrik Modin or Mikael Samuelsson is on the roster. I think we know that. And Sweden knows that too. In that case, why not take the guy who you know will lay it all out on the line instead of the guy who apparently thinks he has a right to play for the defending Gold Medalists?

Now all that said, Modin is a pretty strange choice considering he has played a total of 80-something games over the past three seasons.

Modin is an odd choice for the squad, to put it mildly, but Samuelsson wasn't exactly a shoo-in barring that selection. He probably has a right to some sour grapes, but he still comes off like a kid picked last calling the pity pick ahead of him a loser.
