Its easy to root against the canadians after watching any USA Junior game in Canada. Seriously who goes to USA-Latvia and goes nuts like that. I'd rather shoot 12 yr olds on MW2.

Oh and its another chance to root against 87

As an American who was 11 when the Wall fell, it will be a little strange rooting for the Russians in the Olympics.

I will enjoy watching the games and rooting for Ov's team against anyone but USA. Will root for Red over Crosby anyday.

I've always wanted them to keep a actual save% for actual scoring chances instead of just every weak shot.

In International play I've always pulled for Canada when they played except against the USA, but for the first time ever, I'll be pulling for everyone else. Sad...

Looking forward to the possibility of Canada losing badly due to lack of scoring, and having DSC say on HNIC, that he "repeatedly advised the committee to select Green."...then having Green's comment on the loss via TSN be: "eh, go - - - - yourself!"

Whatever happened to just rooting for the Stars and Stripes? It's not rocket science.

I missed it. Tell me. I had the sound off and it was 6-0 with a 5 on 3 going on for Latvia and then I saw the score was 6-1. What happened? Did Latvia get one and Saskatoon exploded?

Yea...I dont really get that either. I will root for Sweden vs Finland and Russia against Canada, but when the good guys in red white and blue take on all comers I am rooting for them.

Are there seriously citizens that are Caps fans that would root for Russia to beat the USA?

Feel bad for those guys. Probably too much to hope that ESPN will jump at the chance to create an ESPN Washington page (ala the new ESPN Boston, ESPN Dallas, ESPN Chicago pages) with an entire group of beat writers suddenly available as a package deal.

I have got the feeling that Green has a serious "how do you like me now" moment coming in his near future. There is nothing better than layin' THAT on somebody that thought you didnt have it. Ive had the pleasure. Its very sweet.

I turned on the game when it was 8-1. The replay of the goal the crowd went nuts.

The USA has pulled that stuff too. Booing the anthem (and Canada has done that too)...raising the flag upside down (accidental or not - and let's not debate it here please)...When Canadians boo the US anthem I'm embarassed to be Canadian. Likewise, when Americans do it I"m embarassed to be an American.

Neither side is blameless. There is a serious rivalry between Canada and the USA. I can tell you as someone who now lives here, you really can't appreciate the degree to which hockey is engrained in the culture up here. They take it very seriously. It's part of the national identity. Its seen as "our sport" up here.

What's the biggest sport in the USA? Football? Baseball? Basketball? The first two are arguably equal contributors to an American sports identity. In Canada it's Hockey. That's it. Nothing else compares. I'm not making excuses for Canadian fans, there is none for classless behavior. But if you want to know why they are so passionate about it...there you go. They are better than the USA at something that matters to (at least some) Americans. If the USA ever got to the point where they dominated Canada every year for a decade at Hockey...this country might easily implode.

I love this tourny and I hate how every single year people seem to be way too eager to express their hatred. It gets really vicious.

Someone said "just pull for the red white and blue..". I couldn't agree more. Pull for your country and enjoy the tournament. I was going to say don't root for a team to fail out of spite....but you know what? That's what i do with Pittsburgh hahaha. This is somehow different though. It's not just a team...it's a nation. We shouldn't forget that other countries and their citizens are just as proud of their countries and their athletes as we are (whoever you read "we" to be). Root against Canada all you want. Root for Ovechkin. Root against the USA if you aren't a citizen. But leave the hate and the trash out of it.

This post was directed at no one in particular.

Peace.

I agree. I think he'll have a "see what you cut?" moment soon.

But let's be honest, it's not like he is miles better than any of the D men they took. I think they should have takedn him as a PP specialist. Admitedly, as a Caps fan, I am biased. I can't fault them for the choices they made (on the blueline at least). JayBo was left off too. Not as big a snub as people are making it out to be.

Well there is this thing called "shot-quality-neutral save percentage," which is basically save percentage adjusted for shot distance. It's not perfect, but it's better than raw save%.

thanks for sharing that LS. Its a bit of reading. Id prefer a new column on the game scoresheet. Soft Goals Allowed. They can just listen to the game announcers. Its gotta be easier than judging if a shot was going to be on goal or not.

Being the giant Caps fan that I am, I have become a huge fan of Team Russia in recent years, despite the fact that I was born and raised in northern Virginia. Now it's even gotten to the point that I root for Team Sweden over Team USA as well. If I ever ran for president, all my opponent would have to do is show 'Miracle' and then explain to everyone that I root for Russia. My campaign would be over.

I don't feel any particular connection to Team USA, despite the fact that I'm a fairly patriotic guy.

eh I think its the kind of scenario that we all in our hearts root for the us...yet we know what the other teams have in terms of skill, therfore out of respect and seeing your fave players do well you pull for other teams.

I would looove to see russia beat canada due to Don Cherry and all the **** he talks.I love having nhl players in the olympics. It makes it sooo much more exciting to watch, including the return of several once dominant figures like forsberg, jagr, yashin and im even stoked to watch Danny Markov play again.
