Team Canada 2014

Yes, it's 4 years away, and there's no guarantee that NHL'ers will be in the Olympics (though I guarantee you that if Ovechkin forces Bettman's hand and says he is going no matter what, then NHL'ers will be there), but might be fun to speculate who makes it in 2014. I think Canada will have a better team in 2014 than they will this year, at least on paper.

Tavares- Crosby- Bergeron
Hall- Stamkos- Heatley
Nash- Getzlaf- Perry
Toews- Richards- E. Staal
Duchene

Keith- Seabrook
Bouwmeester- Doughty
Myers- Weber
Green

Luongo
Fleury
Ward

I can totally see Carey Price being at least back-up for the 2014 Canadian squad

I too think at least one of those goalies will be off the team, and someone like Mason, Bernier, Quick (I think he's canadian?) or especially Price who will be 26 will be there. And Me thinks one of Taylor Hall, Seguin, McFarland or any of the other top 2010 guys will make it, remember they will be 21-22 years old.

Quick is American. I dont see the hype with Price, he is average at best these days. I think Montreal mishandled him. That being said he has shown flashes of great play and could develop into something special.

I'd like to see how Luongo does in the playoffs and any international play before i name him my starter....

I have Hall making it, he will be in his 4th year in the league and should be a force.

I think it'll be tough to knock off Luongo, Fleury and Ward. Brodeur is going to be 37 this Olympics, Luongo will be 34 in 2014. Fleury will be 29, and Ward 28, both of whom will have considerable Canadian experience internationally, and backstopped teams to cup rings.

But of course, goaltending really is the "toss up" position.

4 years is a long time for trying to predict this. you never know what could happen to some of these players. some could be busts and others could come out of nowhere. you really cant predict something like this.

Of course... but it's just for fun, we're not etching it in stone.

Is Getzlaf planning on going downhill during his prime years??

What makes you think he will not be the #2 center behind Crosby, just as he will be on the 2010 squad?

was this directed to me? I have him as #3 behind Crosby and Stamkos... hardly an unreasonable statement in 4 years time.

In four years time, Getzlaf is only going to be bigger and stronger and more mature. He will only be 28 years old and will have a wealth of experience and championships under his belt at that point in time.

He will be a leader on the team for first time candidates such as Stamkos and Tavares.

He will already have an Olympic Gold Medal (), and I cannot see him being demoted for a first time candidate.

I'm not debating any of this, yet, who cares what number line it is on the pre game chalk board, they're all going to play, just like they will this year. Would you feel better if I put:

Staal- Getzlaf- Perry
Tavares- Crosby- Nash
Hall- Stamkos- Heatley
Towes- Richards- Horton

?

No. Crosby should be the #1 center.

But you are right, it is pretty much useless to debates this right now. Opinions are like ***holes, everyone's got one.

But seriously, your team looks pretty solid. I would be surprised if Hall makes this team, considering he will be pretty young. Players like Carter, Perry, and Heatley will also have a solid shot at this team.

LOL, okay, switch number 1 and 2 and we're set. What would be yours?

There's no point in this really other than just speculate and see what it could be, which is fun. I think Canada's 2014 team could be lethal.

Not gonna put a full team together, but here are a few newcomers who I think will crack it:

Marc Staal
Taylor Hall
John Tavares
Steven Stamkos (if not this year)
Drew Doughty (ditto)
Brent Seabrook (ditto)

It might be premature to pencil Hall in on the hardest roster to crack in the world before he's even played a full U20 tournament! But hey, if the projections are right he should have a shot.

Out of curiosity, do you really think Weber will be on Canada's bottom pairing in 2014?

Thornton, the leading post-lockout NHL scorer, is going to be too washed up for Team Canada when he's 34....?

My dream: Sharks win the cup this year, Blake retires, Thornton becomes captain, they win another two cups by then, they're officially a dynasty, and Thornton captains the 2014 team to gold.

Yes I can admit that's quite the long shot. Especially the part about Thornton captaining the 2014 team, which will almost positively be captained by Crosby.

Also, Brodeur is only 37, and he's known as an endurance goalie. I could see a 41 year-old Brodeur being on the team, especially considering how loved he is by people in the hockey world and how well the 2002 team did despite having lots of old guys.

A lot can change between now and then, but here's my take in no particular order(age in 2014 in brackets):

Forwards

Sidney Crosby(26)
Dany Heatley(33)
Joe Thornton(34)
Ryan Getzlaf(28)
Cory Perry(28)
Rick Nash(29)
Steven Stamkos(24)
Jonathan Toews(25)
John Tavares(23)
Eric Staal(29)
Patrice Bergeron(28)
James Neal(26)
Matt Duchene(23) or Taylor Hall(22)

Nash-Crosby-Heatley
E.Staal-Getzlaf-Perry
Tavares-Thornton-Stamkos
Neal-Toews-Bergeron
Duchene/Hall

Defense

Shea Weber(28)
Duncan Keith(30)
Brent Seabrook(28)
Drew Doughty(24)
Jay Bouwmeester(30)
Mike Green(28)
Marc Staal(27) or Tyler Myers(24)

Goaltending

Roberto Luongo(34)
Marc-Andre Fleury(29)
Carey Price/Cam Ward/Steve Mason
